5 Young Adult Series To Read
What’s better than a great book? A great series. And although the Young Adult genre has been often overlooked it has some amazing series. We’ll just assume that you know all about Harry Potter, The Hunger Games and Twilight.
Here’s few Young Adult series to get stuck into…
The Infernal Devices
Although this is a spinoff series of The Mortal Instruments, it turned out to be much better than its predecessor. The series takes place in London England in 1878 and follows Tessa Gray, an orphaned teenage girl who discovers she has the power to shape-shift. If you like fantasy you’ll love this.
Our editor, Danielle, says it’s her favourite young adult series!
The Princess Diaries
You’ve probably seen the movie based on this series but if you haven’t read the original books recommend that you get on it ASAP. Spoiler, but Mia the narrator finds out she is a princess and is suddenly pushed into the limelight. The story is told though Mia’s diary. Although Mia is a princess this is a totally relatable coming of age story. It’s funny and endearing and Mia is just basically us. And it’s littered with a lot of early noughts pop culture. There are 10 books in the original series plus a more recent addition in the form of Royal Wedding: A Princess Diaries Novel. There’s also a lot of talk of there being a new Princess Diaries movie in the making. Yes, please.
The Wrath and the Dawn
Inspired by A Thousand and One Nights. Khalid, the eighteen-year-old ruler, takes a new bride each night only to have her executed at sunrise. So when sixteen-year-old Shahrzad volunteers to marry Khalid she does so with a plan to stay alive and exact revenge on Khalidfor the murder of her best friend and countless other girls. But soon she begins to fall in love with the very boy who killed her dearest friend. She discovers that the murderous boy-king is not all that he seems and neither are the deaths of so many girls. Shazi is determined to uncover the reason for the murders and to break the cycle once and for all. It’s a lot darker than the other reads on our list but it’s so, so good.
The Luxe
Think Gossip Girl, but set in 1899 Manhattan. It’s full of scandals, gossip, rivalry, mystery and murder. There’s four books in the series, The Luxe, Rumours, Envy and Splendor. Rumour has it that the creators of The O.C and Gossip Girl have been developing it into a movie along the lines of Moulin Rouge. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
The Red Queen
In a world divided by blood – red or silver. The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. But when Mare finds herself working in the Silver Palace she discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power. Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime. If you liked The Hunger Games you’ll enjoy this.
So far there have been 3 books in the series with number 4 set to follow in 2018.
