There’s A Movie Based On A Harry Styles Fanfiction!

Yes, you read that correctly! There’s an actual movie based on a Harry Styles Fanfiction!

Everything That You Need To Know About After

Let’s hop back in time to 2013 first. Anna Todd started using the popular fanfiction website “Wattpad” to write a YA based on the members of One Direction. In the original chapters (which are still available to read fo’ free on Wattpad, BTW) Tessa a college freshman, falls in love with Harry and the two end up in a tumultuous relationship. Anna wrote over 80 chapters and the series has had over a BILLION views! Wattpad reached out to Anna and offered her help in finding a publisher. The rest is history! Once the book was published the movie-rights were sold and here we are being blessed with this movie.

As with most Fanfic’s, the story doesn’t actually revolve around Harry Styles being in One Direction. Instead the story happens in Washington State University. Anna obvs couldn’t use Harry’s real name (or the other 1D boys names!) once the book was publish due to legal reasons (sad times!), so Harry was changed to Holden.

Here’s The Trailer!👇

Was anyone else waiting for him to reveal that he was a vampire or something?

Meet The Cast

Hero Fiennes-Tiffin plays Hardin Scott aka Harry Styles. Hero previously stared in Harry Potter playing the young Voldemort. Fun fact: his uncle IRL, Ralph Fiennes, played Voldemort! The role of Tessa is played by Josephine Langford. If Josephine looks slightly familiar that’s because she has a v famous sister; Katherine Langford from 13 Reasons Why.

When is After released in Ireland?

At the moment we don’t know.đŸ˜„ It’s out this week (April 12th) in the US. reached out to the production company to find out its Irish release date. They said, “Currently we do not have a release plan for UK/Ireland but will let you know when there is one”. So, it will happen, but when is the question. We have a feeling it will happen over the summer OR Netflix will get it in a similar situation to “Isn’t It Romantic“, which went on general release in US cinemas, but was made available on Netflix internationally a few weeks later. We’ll keep you posted!

What are your thoughts on a Harry Styles Fanfiction being turned into a movie?

Should We Be Banning Disney Princess Movies?

The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, one if not all of these movies bring every girl back to when they were little and the excitement they had over their favourite Disney Princess. Hell, even now at 22 years of age I’d still get excited to curl up on the sofa and rewatch the classic Disney Princess movies! Someone who may not be so keen to do the same is Keira Knightly

Keira Knightley, mother to her 3 year old daughter recently announced while on the Ellen DeGeneres show that she will be banning her 3 year old from watching certain Disney movies as she believes they are sending unhealthy messages to young girls. She justifies her statement by  criticising how the Princesses wait around for men to come rescue them, which doesn’t sit well with Knightley who is clearly very much about women’s empowerment. But is this taking it a step too far?

As a little girl, what was it that stuck with you? Speaking for myself I know that as a little girl I didn’t take away a message of women being weak and hopeless without men before they came to their rescue. I remember the catchy songs and loveable characters, from Sebastien in the Little Mermaid to The Genie in Aladdin. However, she has said she’s “team Frozen” and is also happy to let her watch Moana.

Do Disney Princess Movies Really Impact Us?

Perhaps one of Keira Knightley’s most well known roles was when she played Elizabeth Swann in Disneys The Pirates of the Caribbean, her character being somewhat of a damsel in distress, ironically. Will she ban her daughter from watching that movie too? I think in the sudden surge of feminism and the encouragement of women to be independent and powerful, things may be getting a little bit excessive. I don’t believe that any of the movies I watched growing up had much of an impact on who I am as a person today, and I don’t think letting your child watch Disney Princesses will have a negative effect on them.

For myself, Disney movies were a childhood staple, just because I watched Ariel give up her voice for a Prince didn’t mean I would make equal sacrifices for a guy when I got older. Disney seem to be making improvements in this area with the release of movies such as Moana and Brave where the representation of female characters is more positive as they have more leader-like qualities, hence why Moana is in the good books with Knightley.

Disney 4 Life!

This isn’t to be misinterpreted that I too don’t encourage women to be strong, influential and competent, but maybe if you want to teach your children about feminism and being independent, I think there are better ways to approach it, and coming for Disney films probably isn’t the place to start.

What are your thoughts on the subject? Has she taken it a step too far or does she make some fair points? Have your say in the comments down below!

5 Things To Know About Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina

5 Things To Know About Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina

We’ve already told you that we are super excited for Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina to drop on Netflix next week. Not only is it perfect Halloween viewing, it just looks SO good!

Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina is actually a reboot of the popular show, Sabrina The Teenage Witch, but for a lot of people this is going to be their first introduction to Sabrina Spellman.

Here are 5 things to know about Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina before you watch it…

5 Things To Know About Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina

1. There Was A Movie First

Sorry, but firstly how hilarious was the poster for the movie?!LOL

The original movie, Sabrina The Teenage Witch, revolves around Sabrina, who is sent to live with her eccentric aunts in Riverdale, yes THAT Riverdale – more on that in a moment! There she discovers that she has magical powers which she must try deal with along with trials and tribulations of high school. The movie is pure 1990’s cringe, Sabrina’s crush is played by a super young Ryan Reynolds!

5 Things To Know About Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina

2. The Original TV Show

The movie spawned the original TV show, Sabrina The Teenage Witch. The show was pretty iconic to everyone who grew up in the 1990’s. The show ran from 1996 until 2003 and there was a time when you couldn’t turn on RTÉ 2 without seeing at least one episode a day.

Fun fact: Britney Spears appeared in an episode of the show way back when she was the Ariana Grande of her time.

Sabrina’s Secrets

3. There Was Also A Magazine

Ask your older sisters or cousins about this magazine and we guarantee you that they have a few lurking around at home and know the struggle of trying to get that nail polish pen to work! Sabrina Secrets was a magazine that came out every 2 two weeks and each magazine included a few beauty product to build up your beauty box (money racket, anyone?) but god help the parental unit if you missed a week! Good times. In a time before YouTube this was were you went for a braid tutorial.

We’re pretty sure that this is where Team Missy got their obsession with magazines from, so without it there would be no Missy!

5 Things To Know About Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina

4. What’s The Deal With The Riverdale Connection?

There’s been a lot of talk about the connection between Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina and Riverdale. And those connections runs deep.

Both are from the Archie Comic world and both shows are also run by the same producer, so there’s sure to be that same 1950’s vibe but with a modern spin to Sabrina as well. In the original TV movie Sabrina lived in Riverdale, but in the comics and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina she lives in Greendale, which has been mentioned in Riverdale as being a neighbouring town. So, there could be a crossover at some point. And considering things in Riverdale have suddenly gotten very creepy with the Coopers now involved in a cult, we have a feeling that we will be seeing Sabrina Spellman in Riverdale very soon!

5 Things To Know About Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina

5. Who Plays Sabrina Spellman?

Kiernan Shipka is the star of the show playing Sabrina Spellman. Although she’s only 18, Kieran is a Hollywood veteran at this point. She previously stared in Mad Men and in a number of other roles. Kiernan is also a fashion gal and is regularly dressed by some of the biggest names in fashion. Her style is uh-mazing! AND she also wrote an essay for the recently published “Feminists Don’t Wear Pink (and other lies)“. So, basically she’s just our new girl crush.

Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina is released on Netflix 26 of October. Check out the trailer below!

5 00s Teen TV Shows You Would’ve Been Obsessed With

5 00s Teen TV Shows You Would’ve Been Obsessed With

Following on from our popular 5 00s Teen Movies You Would’ve Been Obsessed With we decided to look as some of the TV shows you would have loved. The great thing is with the wonder of the internet and boxsets you can get a chance to discover these awesome 00s teen tv shows for yourself.

5 00s Teen TV Shows You Would’ve Been Obsessed With

Veronica Mars

Veronica Mars is a teenage private detective obsessed with solving her best friend’s murder. On top of that she’s also dealing with all the usual school drama. Each season focuses on a different crime/murder. And honestly, you will be left on the edge of your seat trying to guess who’s responsible.

Veronica Mars only ran for three series before getting cancelled, which was a documented travesty. It’s a good job that a movie was made in 2014 financed mainly by fans of the show. Yes, people are that dedicated to Veronica and for a good reason. Expect to see some familiar faces pop up in the show like Amanda Seyfried who plays Veronica’s murdered BFF, Lily. If you’re after something with a bit more bite to it than the usual teen dramas on offer, this one is for you!

As of now Veronica Mars is not available on streaming services, but you can purchase the boxsets on Amazon.

5 00s Teen TV Shows You Would’ve Been Obsessed With

Dawson’s Creek

If you like Friends, you’ll enjoy this late 90’s/early 00’s tv show. Dawson’s Creek is where Katie Holmes and Michelle Williams (The Greatest Showman!) got their big break! The series follows Dawson Leary through the ups and downs of life as a teenager. The show even follows them to college. Expect teen drama, romance, and everything else in between!

Dawson’s Creek was on Netflix once upon a time, but for the moment it’s not there. You can purchase the boxsets on Amazon.

5 00s Teen TV Shows You Would’ve Been Obsessed With

The O.C

If you loved Gossip Girl you will adore The O.C!

It’s from the exact same team as GG and fun fact; Seth from The O.C is married to Blair IRL! The show follows Ryan Atwood and his adopted brother Seth, as they try to fit into life in affluent California. Showcasing the culture clashes that can take place when those with a grip of reality are submerged in a shallow, materialistic society. It’s not as complex as it sounds, and the teen drama is always a bit of fun, if not slightly over exaggerated! The soundtrack is also on point. Expect to see a very early performance from The Killers!

You can purchase the boxsets on Amazon.

5 00s Teen TV Shows You Would’ve Been Obsessed With

The Hills

Okay, so we’re kinda cheating mentioning this along with The O.C because The Hills kinda exists because of The O.C! Stay with us on this; The O.C was a HUGE pop culture phenomenon in its day and due to its success someone at MTV thought it would be a great idea to make a reality TV show about the “real lives” of wealthy teens in Orange County, California. Laguna Beach: The Real O.C ran for 3 years on MTV and was super popular. One of the stars from the show, Lauren Conrad, was then given her own show. The Hills followed Laren moving to Hollywood for fashion school and to intern at Teen Vogue.

The Hills really was the predecessor of all modern reality TV shows. Get ready for such classic quotes as “I want to forgive you, and I want to forget you”.

In sure sign that we’ve in the midst of a naughties revival, The Hills is coming back to our TV very soon. AND Misha Barton (Marissa from The O.C!) has signed up to appear in it. 00’s overload, or what?!?

The Hills is still shown on MTV at times, but expect to see the series repeated ahead of the new series in early 2019. You can purchase the boxsets on Amazon.

5 00s Teen TV Shows You Would’ve Been Obsessed With

Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Seriously, if you were a kid, tween, teen or adult from 1996 to 2003 chances are you would have been OBSESSED with this show. Buffy is a kick-ass, feminist hero who was really ahead of her time. T

his was on Netflix but it has been removed, so light a candle that it will return ASAP. Until then you can purchase the boxset on Amazon.

What are your thoughts on 00s teen tv shows? Need to watch or leave them in the past?

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Trailer Is Here!

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Trailer

We know we’ve said this before, but we are just SO excited to see Chilling Adventures of Sabrina! And now finally the full trailer has dropped.

We’re pretty sure that Sabrina is going to be your new obsession. Not only does it star our absolutely gal crush, Kieran Shipka, it’s also coming out just in time for Halloween!

And if you’re thinking “Hey, that looks a bit like Riverdale“, you are right! That 1950’s dream-world vibe is a signature of Riverdale at this point. Both shows are from same producer and are based off of the famed Archie Comics world. Not only that, Sabrina lives in Greendale which has been mentioned in Riverdale as being a neighbouring town. So, there could be a crossover at some point. And although Riverdale is known for being a bit creepy at times (em, The Black Hood!), Chilling Adventures of Sabrina looks set to take that to a whole new level.

If you’re just as excited as us to watch Chilling Adventures of Sabrina we have good news. The whole 10 episode series will drop on Netflix 26 October making it perfect Halloween/Mid-Term break viewing! Netflix are so sure that they’re on to a winner that they’ve already shot season 2.

Things We Are Living For This Autumn

Things We Are Living For This Autumn

Yes, it’s V depressing to be back in school but there’s also a lot to get excited about now that it’s officially autumn – be still our beating Halloween heart!

Here are some of the things to look forward to this autumn…

Things We Are Living For This Autumn

TV Shows

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

We are mega excited for the arrival of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Sabrina Spellman must reconcile her dual nature as a half-witch, half-mortal while fighting evil forces. So far a lot of the details have been kept very hush, hush but there is talk that it will exist in the same world as Riverdale. Both shows have the same creator and mention has been made of Greendale in Riverdale in the past. The full series will drop on Netflix on October 26, so it will be perfect Halloween Break viewing material. We’ll have more details as we get them!

Another TV show that were are excited to see is Legacies. Stay with us on this; it’s a spin-off of The Originals, which was a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries. The show will revolve around Hope Mikaelson, aka Klaus’s daughter. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, The Vampire Diaries and The Originals are two HIGHLY underrated shows. Both are on Netflix, so now you have an excuse to binge-watch both. Legacies premiers October 25, 2018 in the US, but no word when it will air in Ireland. We feel like TG4 will get it, as they aired The Vampire Diaries and The Originals.

Autumn is traditionally a very busy time in the movie world as most highly anticipated films drop between October and December to be in the run for the Oscars.

Crazy Rich Asians

Yes, we mentioned Crazy Rich Asians before and hyped up a August release date, but for reasons unknown the release date in the UK and Ireland was changed multiple times. But has confirmed that it will be released in Irish cinemas on the 14th of September. There’s been a lot of talk about this movie. Some have called it the saviour of the rom-com genre, others are obsessed with the fashion and it’s also important to note that this is a huge moment in representation in film. Seriously, read the books ASAP!

Crazy Rich Asians is out 14th September.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

We say this as HUGE Harry Potter fans; we weren’t super hyped for the first movie in the Fantastic Beasts series. BUT The Crimes of Grindelwald looks really, really good. We are excited to see where the series goes because Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them felt more like a foundation movie to get the series rolling and away from Harry Potter.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is out 16 November.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

If Mackenzie Foy looks a bit familiar to you, that’s because she played Renesmee Cullen in Twilight. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is going to try expand on the much-loved Tchaikovsky’s ballet, The Nutcracker. It looks like fun and it will definitely be a great way to start getting in the festive spirit.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is out 2 November.

Mary Queen of Scots

Our very own Saoirse Ronnan might just finally be set for Oscar glory with her turn in Mary Queen of Scots. Margot Robbie co-stars in a very unfortunate get-up, but points for accurate history!

Mary Queen of Scots is out 18 January.

The book relates are kinda quiet towards the end of the year but there are a few worth noting. First up is My Mum Tracy Beaker, which is out 4 October. This probably means very little to you but Team Missy was super excited when this landed into our offices a few months ago. You see Tracy Beaker and basically all books by its author, Jacqueline Wilson, made up our early teen years. We highly recommend that you give the original book, The Story of Tracy Beaker, a read. The series was really beloved and was even made into a TV show.

Feminists Don’t Wear Pink (and other lies) is also out the 4th of October. This is a collection of essays about what feminism means to various women. Some contributors to the book include Emma Watson, Zoe Sugg, Keira Knightley,  Saoirse Ronan, Tanya Burr, Kiernan Shipka and many more.

Seriously, bury us in autumn trends! We are very excited to dig out the autumnal makeup. We are here for the return of Berry Lips. Also expect to see blue and purple eyeshadows. Keep an eye on to see how to create wearable looks of these trends.

You’ll also start to see a lot of the Christmas sets appearing in shops pretty soon. Keep an eye out to grab a good bargain, but be careful with sets that just give you miniature sizes. Yes, its fun to try new things, but we’re all about genuine value here at If we see anything that’s worth while we’ll update you on our Insta!

Urban Decay will also release their Naked Cherry Palette. No word yet on a release date but we think mid-October.

Things We Are Living For This Autumn

New Look Teddy Coat

Dont @ us, but we are of the opinion that Autumn/Winer fashion is the best. Soz, Summer! You just can’t beat being snuggled up in oversized jumpers. And there is serious joy to be had from selecting a winter coat. Don’t even get us started on scarves!

The good news for your bank balance is that a lot of the trends from last year are still big news this year. There’s still lots of tartan and teddy coats, as well as lots of corduroy. We’ve already hyped the return of Dr. Martens and believe us, mustard yellow is going to be everywhere.

5 Ways TV Shows Distorted Our Expectations Of Secondary School

We’re not sure about you, but before we at Missy started Secondary School we had great expectations thanks to  TV Shows! Turns out that these TV Shows were very very different to what awaited us (thanks Gossip Girl…)!

With that in mind, here are 5 TV Shows that distorted our expectations of Secondary School (or High School as they’d say).

1) Gossip Girl & Uniforms

5 Ways TV Shows Distorted Our Expectations Of Secondary School

As we mentioned before Gossip Girl was a big one for us. Now we didn’t exactly think we’d be prancing around NYC on our lunch break mingling with Manhattans elite, but the uniforms Serena and the gang rock had us thinking we’d have more opportunities to customise our uniforms once we hit Secondary School. We were very very wrong. No blazers, no cute shirts that can be worn 20 different ways, and definitely no cute mini skirts. Nope, we were faced with an ankle-length nightmare.

Read More: 10 Reasons Why You Need To Watch Gossip Girl

2) Gilmore Girls & Grades

5 Ways TV Shows Distorted Our Expectations Of Secondary School

Ok, so we know Rory Gilmore is portrayed as being above averagely smart, but seriously, our expectations were way too high because of her. Rory is shown as having a great social life – she participates in local events, has friends to hang out with, has weekly dinners with her grandparents, spends a lot of TV time with her Mom, and maintains a relationship all whilst killing it on the grades front. We’re not saying this is impossible, but she made it look so darn easy! And trust us, a lot of effort is needed to maintain this level of awesomeness in school.

3) Pretty Little Liars & Drama

5 Ways TV Shows Distorted Our Expectations Of Secondary School

Thanks to PLL we thought secondary school was going to be a drama a minute. All those hormones packed into one space screamed potential for a drama overload but nope, everything was very quite! We were shocked! No scandals, no gossip that could bowl you over, no sordid affairs, nada!

4) The Vampire Diaries & Teen Romances

5 Ways TV Shows Distorted Our Expectations Of Secondary School

If there’s one TV Show that hyped up teen romances it was The Vampire Diaries. We entered secondary school ready to have whirlwind romances aplenty! Bonus points if the objects of our affections were some sort of supernatural beings! Again, this one fell flat on its face. It was hard enough trying to find a date to the debs we could tolerate, let alone deal with that level of intensity in a relationship as a teen! You’re not lacking anything so don’t be worrying – these relationships are purely for the screen, thank goodness!

5) Riverdale & Dress Code

5 Ways TV Shows Distorted Our Expectations Of Secondary School

This one is really only accurate for those days you’re allowed wear your own clothes to school, but still, if you think you’re gonna get away with the hem lines the girls of Riverdale do, think again! We would have loved to have rocked some of the fab looks from Riverdale, but we feel it would have ended in a trip to the principals office! Best to stick with these trends for non-school days, just to safe!

Did any of these shows make you think Secondary School would be different to what it is? Let us know in the comments!

5 Movies To Watch If You Loved To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before

We are officially OBSESSED with To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before at We just can’t get enough of it TBH. And even though there are rumours going around that a sequel is in the works, we’re just not sure how we’re going to cope in the meantime without our Lara Jean and Peter fix.

If like us you’re searching for something else to try fill that void, here are 5 movies to watch if you loved To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before

13 Going On 30

The whole way through TATBILB all we could think about was that Peter (aka Noah Continuo) gave us serious Mark Ruffalo vibes. Seriously, he even sounds like him. Weird! And it turns out that Noah is actually a huge fan of 13 Going On 30 too!

13 Going On 30 tackles our obsession with wanting to be older when we’re teens, and shows that you should always be careful what you wish for. It also teaches us that sometimes “the one” is right in front of you. The soundtrack is also full of banging 80s tunes!

13 Going On 30 is currently streaming on Netflix.

The Perks Of Being A Wallflower

Socially awkward teen Charlie is a wallflower, always watching life from the sidelines (a bit like Lara Jean) until two charismatic students come along and show him that there’s more to life than just watching it go by. Free-spirited Sam and her stepbrother Patrick help Charlie discover the joys of friendship, first love, music and more. However, it’s not all plain-sailing for Charlie as he still has some serious issues to deal with. Like TATBILB, The Perks Of Being A Wallflower was based on of a super popular YA novel.

The Perks Of Being A Wallflower is currently streaming on Netflix.

Love, Simon

Everyone deserves a great love story, but for 17-year-old Simon Spier, it’s a little more complicated. He hasn’t told his family or friends that he’s gay, and he doesn’t know the identity of the anonymous classmate that he’s fallen for online. Resolving both issues proves hilarious, terrifying and life-changing. Love, Simon is an emotional rollercoaster; teaching us the value of friendship, family, and following your heart.

Love, Simon is avaialbe now on DVD.

Sixteen Candles

If You Loved To All The Boys I Loved Before, you really need to watch Sixteen Candles – the movie that is mentioned in the movie and even makes it into “the contract” between Lara Jean and Peter.

With the occasion all but overshadowed by her sister’s upcoming wedding, angst-ridden Samantha faces her 16th birthday with typical adolescent dread. Samantha pines for studly older boy Jake, but worries that she won’t be enough for him. Meanwhile, Samantha must constantly rebuff the affections of nerdy Ted , the only boy in the school, unfortunately, who seems to take an interest in her.

Easy A

If fake relationships are your thing, you need to watch Easy A. Olive tells a lie to get out of camping with her friends only for it to do the rounds at school. And suddenly Olive is notorious, but for all the wrong reasons. Just how far will she take this lie? If you’re looking for something to laugh your head off to, Easy A is the one of you.

Of course you could just watch To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before again, and again and again…not that we’re going to do that or anything…!

5 Things Wrong With Netflix’s New Show, Insatiable!

To say Netflix’s new show, Insatiable, has caused a stir on the internet is a serious understatement. The show, starring Debbie Ryan, has had it’s fair share of controversy. The trailer caused a huge stir when it was first released. Although the cast and creators insisted people would think differently once it aired, Insatiable has failed to do anything but enrage audiences further.

As we here at Missy believe in an impartial approach, we sat down to watch Insatiable with an open mind.  But sadly, no matter how much we love Debbie Ryan, we couldn’t get on board with this disaster of a production. So, we have put together the 5 things we think are wrong with Netflix’s new show, Insatiable!

1. “Skinny Is Magic”…

When we heard these words uttered from the mouth of the protagonist Patty (Ryan), our jaws dropped! Did someone really think it was wise to put those words in a script in 2018?! We know so much about eating disorders and triggers in this day and age, that there really is no excuse for thinking it funny, satirical (or any other writing device you can think of) to allow that line to be uttered even once. So the fact that it’s said several times throughout the 12 episodes of Insatiable is shocking!

2. Guns Are Used As Comic Relief

Now, unless you have been hiding under a rock for the past while, you will know the US has had an issue with gun violence and school shootings for a very long time. As of June, there were 154 mass shootings in America in 2018 alone. So why the creators of this show thought it would be a great bit of comic relief to pop a gun into Insatiable (and in the hands of its ditziest character we might add), is really beyond comprehension.

3. Feminism Takes A Backseat

The show centres around a lot of female characters, and whilst you may be thinking isn’t it great that there’s a show representing female characters on screen, think again. The tropes used in this show kick feminism right where it hurts… A particular example that resonated strongly with this us is, “turns out you can’t have it all.” These words are uttered my Magnolia as her mother is shown to be torn between her work life and her home life. In an age where women are standing up for equality in the workplace and proving they can balance work and children etc. it’s a real setback for young women to be given the impression that this is false, and essentially can’t be aspired to.

Now we’re not saying young women are going to live their lives based around Insatiable, but the creators could’ve shown that yes, women in fact can “have it all”. Your Mam’s probably doing it right now!

5 Things Wrong With Netflix's New Show, Insatiable!

4. Making Light Of Sexual Harassment/Assault

You may have noticed a recurring theme here, Insatiable is full of elements that make you want to shout at your screen “but why?!?!?”. The show making light of sexual assault and harassment was one of those moments for us. Again, in a time when issues around sexual assault are being brought to the forefront of our society, you would think creators would highlight this rather than use it for a cheap laugh. Bob, lawyer/pageant coach, is accused of “touching” a young a girl inappropriately by her stage mom when she fails to win a pageant. Not only is this false accusation of a serious crime treated casually, a storyline of statutory rape is also handled in a nonchalant manner.

And Finally…

5. It’s Just A Bit Boring…

Overall, the story is very slow to progress, and when it does it’s just a bit boring if we’re being honest. Usually Netflix produces shows that have us binging for days on end, sadly Insatiable failed to do so. It felt like a chore to watch. The lack of character development, and story arc really left this show lacking.

Did you watch Insatiable? What were your thoughts?

Our Top 5 TV Shows With Badass Female Leads!

Badass. A tough, uncompromising, or intimidating person. We don’t know about you, but this could describe every woman we know…

So, why is it when it comes to TV and film, it can seem like guys get all the good “badass” parts? They’re the ones with the fight scenes, or the high flying jobs, or the cool one liners that border on cringe worthy (we’re looking at you CSI:Miami…). Yet some of the strongest people on this planet are women…

We here at Missy aren’t ok with this misrepresentation. So we have put together a list of 5 TV Shows that have badass women as their lead characters!

TV Shows With Badass Female Leads

1. How To Get Away With Murder

5 TV Shows With Badass Female Leads! How To Get Away With Murder

Meet Annalise Keating, the badass lawyer/lecturer who runs the show (quite literally!).

Annalise, along with 5 of her top law students, soon become tangled up in a murder plot. Written by Shonda Rhimes, How To Get Away With Murder will have you on a binge watching extravaganza! If you’re a fan of a flashback or few, you will love the alternation between past and present. The script is written in a way that you’re always left guessing, and even when you think you’ve cracked it; you’re probably very very wrong…

Not only is her character a badass, Viola Davies is an amazing badass actress, and absolutely shines in this role! Davies has received critical acclaim for her portrayal of Annalise becoming the first black woman to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series!

Watch If: You fancy yourself as a criminal defence attorney.

2. Grey’s Anatomy

5 TV Shows With Badass Female Leads! Grey's Anatomy

Grey’s Anatomy centres around Meredith Grey a young doctor (already a badass) starting out in her career. We love Grey’s Anatomy because it pushes the boundaries when it comes to thinking about women in the medical field. You will often hear people automatically use “he” when speaking about a doctor. In presenting us with female characters who are just as capable of holding the title “doctor” as their male colleagues, Shonda Rhimes (the show’s creator), forces people to realise women are doctors too!

Ellen Pompeo, Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl and Chandra Wilson star as badass doctors taking on the medical profession, kicking butt, and dealing with misogyny in the workplace!

3. Scandal

5 TV Shows With Badass Female Leads! Scandal

Scandal is yet another of Shonda Rhimes creations! If there’s one thing we’ve learned from compiling this list it’s that Shonda knows how to write the parts of a badass woman!

Scandal is a political thriller starring Kerry Washington as badass Olivia Pope, a lawyer who runs a crisis management firm based in Washington, D.C.

This show has evvveerryything you could possibly want; drama, lies, romance and of course, scandal…

A young Olivia Pope finds herself enthralled in a love affair with Senator Fitzgerald Grant as she helps manage his campaign trail to become the next President of the United States! As if that wasn’t scandalous enough, Olivia’s firm, OPA, handles the sordid affairs of some of Washington’s most prominent figures.

Scandal has won and been nominated for countless awards! We loved this series so much, and binge watched it faster than we care to admit to!

Watch If: You see yourself headed for the Oval Office… well, maybe Áras an UachtarĂĄin.

4. The Bold Type

5 TV Shows With Badass Female Leads! The Bold Type

What’s better than a show with a badass female lead I hear you ask? How about a show with 3 badass female leads!

The Bold Type follows three friends Jane, Kat and Sutton around NYC. They work for Women’s magazine Scarlet. The show highlights the issues faced by women in publishing by juxtaposing the mostly all female staff of the magazine with the almost all male board of directors, i.e the people who decide if the publication lives or dies. Scarlet is aimed at women, yet it’s contents and funding is based around the decisions of men… A (male) character remarks in the first episode that Scarlet is just a sex magazine, cos that’s all women would be interested right? *rolls eyes*

Sarah Watson, the shows creator, does a great job of exploring prominent social issues in women’s & girl’s lives today. The 3 characters of course find themselves in awkward situations which adds to the light heartedness of the plot, but there is also a highlighting of issues like racism, xenophobia, sexuality, rape culture, gender roles. We love the gals of The Bold Type and we think you will too!

Watch If: You see yourself working at a magazine one day!

5. The Crown

5 TV Shows With Badass Female Leads! The Crown

Is there a more badass role than that of Queen? We don’t think so! The Crown is a Netflix original series that focuses on Queen Elizabeth II’s ascension to the throne.

Queen Elizabeth was only 25 when she became Queen of England. Can you imagine?! The third queen to sit on the throne through her own right (not through marriage). Her ancestors Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria being first and second to do so.

In today’s world, female leaders are still talked about and second guessed by their male counterparts. Can you imagine what it must have been like back in 1956? The Crown allows us an insight into what life for young Elizabeth was like before and after she became Queen of England.

There’s plenty of drama to keep you going, and many an historical event for those of you who love a bit of history. The Crown showcases how tough and well, frankly, how badass Queen Elizabeth had had to be throughout her reign. Dealing with governments and family alike was no mean feat!

Watch If: You’re a fan of Lizzie and co.!

5 00s Teen Movies You Would’ve Been Obsessed With

5 00s Teen Movies You Would've Been Obsessed With

There’s no doubt that there are lots of movies and TV shows on offer from streaming services, but sometimes you just need a bit of inspo. We’ve already delved into some of the best Old school TV Shows for your viewing pleasure, so now it’s time to turn our attentions to some old school teen movies.

00’s teen movies were the best and frankly they just don’t make ’em like they used to. If you had been a teenager growing up in the ’00s, these movies would have been your fav!

Get the popcorn ready and prepare to laugh, cry and be baffled by the fact it was ok for a teen to hook-up with her coach…

A Walk To Remember

A Walk To Remember is based on the book by the same author of The Notebook, The Last Song, Dear John and a ton of other films. The movie follows the typical formula of a bad boy falling for the outcast girl, but there is a huge twist in the story mid-way though. Warning: this will break your heart, so have the tissues ready.

The Lizzie McGuire Movie

Honestly, it was hard to pick just one Hilary Duff movie to include on our list because Hilary dominated 00s teen movies. A Cinderella Story came in so close, but for us The Lizzie McGuire movie is our top pick. Although it did give us unreasonable expectations about what our Transition Year Trip would be like. Spoiler: you will not discover your own famous pop star doppelgÀnger and perform at huge concert. Sorry. But this is what dreams are made of!

Save The Last Dance

If there was one thing that 00s teen movies did well, it was dance movies. And because this was the first in a long line of dance related movies (we’re looking you, Step Up) it’s probably the best. Sara, a ballet dancer, moves from a small town to the south side of Chicago when her mother dies in a car accident were she struggles to adjust to her new life. Then she meets Derek. Together they blend their love of ballet and hip hop as they both learn to move on from their troubled pasts.

Bend It Like Beckham

18-year-old Jess loves playing football, but her parents have forbidden her to play because she is a girl. After meeting Jules she joins a local women’s team, but she finds it near impossible to juggle her passion and her families expectations. Bend It Like Beckham is more than just a movie about football. It’s about bending the rules on family expectations and gender norms and having strong, supportive friendships to see you through. Out of all the 00s teen movies, this one is probably the most inspiring.

13 Going On 30

Ever feel like you’re over being a teen and wish that you could just fast-forward to your awesome adult life? Well, be careful what you wish for is all we’re saying. When Jenna makes a wish at her 13th Birthday Party she is shocked to wake up the next morning as a 30-year-old magazine editor in New York. THB we would be shook too. A lot of hilarity ensues. The soundtrack is also awesome!
