Shake Your Shyness: How To Stop Being Shy

Team Missy

If you suffer from shyness, you know how crippling it can be.

Some people are naturally quiet and placid but completely confident and secure, while others are so shy that they’re afraid to speak up or stand out for fear of being mocked. In some cases, people who don’t seem shy at all and are outgoing and flamboyant, can be suffering on the inside and using humour and bravado to try and mask their fears.

If you are plagued by bashfulness, fear of being judged or go scarlet at the most awkward moments, read on to find out how to stop being shy once and for all…

Super Shy In School

Too scared to pipe-up in class and terrified of public speaking? School is a frightening place when you’re shy, because the whole experience is designed to lift you from your comfort zone and force you to interact.

The next time you’re called upon in class to read aloud, instead of wearing your insecurities all over your face, pause. Take a deep breath and focus on the task at hand. If you’re worrying about what everyone else thinks, of course you’re going to make mistakes, so zone out. After a while it will become second nature. If you really struggle with reading aloud practice at home for 5 minutes everyday.

Guarded In Groups

Do you clam-up and feel totally out of your depth in big gangs? With the more confident and self-assured folks vying for attention, it’s instinct for bashful people to shy away from the situation. It’s easy to let your louder, more confident friends take the lead, but don’t let shyness render you mute.

Start small and try chatting to others one-on-one, this will build your confidence until you’re ready to branch out. Remember that you don’t need to be Little Miss Chatty in order to fit in. True friends will get what you’re about and respect it.

Blushing With Boys

Even the most confident of girls can be shaken to their core around boys and loose their cool, especially when it comes to a guy that you like. This one is easy – just fake it! Act calm and collected, even if you’re totally bricking it on the inside. Sure, your face may betray you with some pesky blushes, but you know what? Boys find that cute!

Fake it ’til you make it, and eventually it’ll feel natural. Boys are only human after all, and probably feeling pretty shy themselves. It helps to remember that lads are not mythical creatures, even though it some times feels like they’re from another planet!

Remember!

Use positive mantras.

Look in the mirror every morning and tell yourself that you won’t let nerves or shyness get in the way of your day. Say it often enough and it might just sink in.

Don’t hold yourself back

Don’t feel like you’ll never have a chance with the most popular guy in school or to be friends with the “cool crowd” because you’re too meek. Opposites attract, and often louder people seek out shy, quiet peeps and visa versa. Balance is good in a relationship.

Breathe!

If you feel your face reddening, your voice braking or heartbeat speeding up, try and relax by taking a deep, calming breath. Take a second to centre yourself and carry on.

People don’t really care!

Most people are too hung up on themselves to really pay much attention to you. So, if you have a moment where your shyness overcomes you, it’s fine. People will honestly probably not even remember. So, get it out of your head and move on.

Push yourself out of your comfort zone

The only way to get over your shyness is to get uncomfortable, and often. It can feel really daunting to have to put yourself out there and try new things. Yes, things could go wrong, but what if they don’t? What if you succeed beyond your widest dreams? And so what if you fail? Everyone fails at some point and there are lessons to be learned in how you pick yourself back up again. Nothing changes, if nothing changes. So, just go for it!

Not everyone has a performer or extroverted.

Own your personality, and remember that being quiet is not a bad thing. Everyone is different.
