The Lessons We Learned In 2020 That We Can Take Into 2021 With Us

Róisín Lynch

2020 was a hard year for all of us. No matter where you came from or what your life was like, no-body got out unscathed.

While it was a difficult year, it was a year that taught us a lot about life and forced us to think and reflect on the way we had been living our lives.

Here are some lessons we learned in 2021 and use in 2021 that will hopefully lead to a more positive year and life overall!

The Value of Time With Friends And Family

In a year like no other we had to stay apart from friends and family in a bid to protect them. We had to distance ourselves as an act of care; a difficult concept to wrap your head around. As social creatures, social isolation proved very challenging for the majority of us but if there’s one thing for sure, it’s that we won’t be taking any time spent with friends and family in the future for granted.

Not being able to meet up with our friends and family in our usual ways taught us the importance of that quality time in our day-to-day lives. And it’s not that we ever took the time we spent with our loved ones for granted, it’s simply something we never thought we would lose.

It goes without saying that when life does get back to the way it used to be, we’ll embrace every hug, make every event, and take every chance to spend all the time we can with those we love.

The Importance of Our Health And Exercise

2020 and the spread of the coronavirus certainly put into perspective the importance of health and exercise in our lives. Being confined to our homes, the simple act of movement proved a saving grace for many. Whether it was a quick walk, run or getting in on the home workout trend, exercise helped make a difficult time that little bit easier.

At the same time not being able to go to your usual daily gym session or meet up with your swimming group, made us realise just how important exercise and social interactions are for our mental well-being.

Not To Take The Simple Things For Granted

If there’s anything we can all take from 2020 it’s to not take the little things for granted. No one could have ever imagined a world where we wouldn’t be able to go out for dinner, or to the cinema or even just meet up in a friend’s house. However, when we were stripped of all that we learned that the things that once made up our normal week are now luxuries we’ll never take for granted again.

I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that a trip Tesco was the highlight of my week for a while so it definitely only go up from here!

That Life Is Short And Everything Can Change In A Heartbeat

Last but certainly not least is the simple concept that life can change in no time at all.  One day was all it took back in March for the life we all knew and were accustomed to, to completely change. What 2020 has shown us all, most importantly, is that life is precious and you never know what is waiting for you just around the corner. We have learned to focus on the simple things, and to enjoy them while we have them because you never know what is going to happen.

So while it was a difficult year, 2020 taught us some very valuable lessons! By taking these lessons learnt in to 2021 with us we are sure of a brighter and happier year ahead☺

What lessons learned in 2020 will stay with you the most?
