Why Your Skin Is Breaking Out (And How to Stop It)

Team Missy

Let’s be real – breakouts are the actual worst. You wake up with a spot the size of a five-cent coin on your chin, and suddenly you’re Googling “how to get clear skin overnight” like your life depends on it. We’ve all been there. But here’s the thing: spots are so normal, especially when you’re a teen. Still, that doesn’t mean you just have to suffer through them.

Here’s why your skin might be breaking out – and what you can actually do to help it (without spending a fortune or crying in the mirror).

1. Your Hormones Are Hormon-ing

Yep, puberty is wild. One day your skin is fine, and the next it’s like your pores have declared war. That’s because all the hormones flying around your body during your teens can make your oil glands go into overdrive. More oil = more clogged pores = more breakouts.

What helps: A gentle skincare routine that balances your skin without stripping it. Look for cleansers with ingredients like salicylic acid (great for unclogging pores) or niacinamide (calms redness and oil). CeraVe and La Roche-Posay have fab teen-friendly options.

2. You’re Touching Your Face All The Time

You might not even realise it, but your hands are constantly picking, touching, and leaning on your face – and that transfers oil, dirt, and bacteria straight to your skin.

What helps: Keep your hands away from your face as much as possible. And don’t pick your spots. We know, it’s tempting, but it just makes everything worse and can lead to scarring.

3. You’re Not Washing Your Face Properly

Either you’re over-washing and drying your skin out (which just makes it produce more oil) or you’re not washing enough (hello, leftover makeup and sweat).

What helps: Cleanse your face twice a day – morning and night. No need to go overboard with fancy 10-step routines. Keep it simple: cleanse, moisturise, SPF. That’s it. At night, you can add in a gentle spot treatment if you need to.

4. Your Pillowcase and Phone Are Dirty

We hate to break it to you, but if you haven’t washed your pillowcase in a week, it’s probably covered in oil, hair product, and bacteria. Same goes for your phone screen.

What helps: Change your pillowcase 1–2 times a week and give your phone a wipe down every day. It makes a bigger difference than you’d think.

5. You’re Stressed

Exams, friendship drama, life stuff – it all adds up. And guess what? Stress triggers hormones that can cause breakouts.

What helps: You can’t magic your stress away, but you can manage it. Try journalling, getting some fresh air, or even just putting your phone away for an hour. Self-care helps your skin too.

6. You’re Not Moisturising (Yes, Really)

If you think skipping moisturiser will “dry out” your spots, think again. When your skin is dry, it actually produces more oil to try and fix it, which can cause… more spots.

What helps: Use a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser (aka one that won’t clog your pores). Your skin will thank you.

7. You’re Wearing Heavy Makeup or Not Removing It Properly

Wearing foundation isn’t a crime – but not taking it off properly at night kind of is (for your skin, at least).

What helps: Double cleanse if you wear makeup or SPF. That just means using something like micellar water or a balm first, followed by your regular cleanser.

When to Get Some Help

If your skin is really struggling – like painful cystic acne that’s not getting better – it’s totally okay to chat to your GP or see a dermatologist. Skincare is important, but sometimes your skin needs a little extra support and that’s nothing to be embarrassed about.

The Bottom Line

Breakouts happen. They don’t mean you’re dirty or doing something wrong – they’re just a part of growing up. But with the right info (and a bit of patience), you can get them under control.

Your skin doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful. But if it’s bugging you, now you’ve got a plan.

And if no one’s told you today: you’re glowing already.
