5 Things To Know About Your Parents

Let’s be honest; you can be the best of friends with your parents and the worst of enemies all in the space of like, 10 minutes.

Sometimes it can be very hard to see where your parents are coming from. Here’s 5 things to know about your parents to try demystify them..

They Had A Life Before You

Yep, before ruining your life was their sole goal in life, your parental unit had a whole other life going on before you and your siblings made an appearance. They had relationships, worries, ups and downs, and friends. Ask them about their life. And although we doubt that they used to be a part of the South Side Serpents, there’s probably a lot that you can learn about them and from their own experiences. Ask them what music they used to listen to, or what the fashion was like when they were a teen for some guaranteed lols.

They Don’t Tell You Everything

As much as it might drive you insane, your parents don’t tell you everything and it’s not because they don’t trust you, it’s because they probably want to keep any adult stress and tribulations out of your life.  But the reality is, they have things going on too. Although we’re sure that they’re not planning to take over your city like Hiram Lodge in Riverdale, cut them some slack if you sense that they’re a bit stressed. There’s usually a reason to everything. And although you don’t necessarily have to take on their burdens, look at small ways that you can help them out.

They’re Not Always Right

Shocker, we know. But sometimes parents do get it wrong. Try not to gloat for too long or leverage it to push boundaries. We all make mistakes. The older you get the more you realise that you really do just have to wing it when it comes to life. Adulting is hard. okay!

They’re Constantly Worried About You

We’ve all had the “Where are you?” “What are you doing?” “Who are with?” “What time will you be home at?” texts. It’s not because your parents want to ruin your fun, they’re genuinely worried about you. You are their world and they worry about the constantly, in big ways and small way. So, be open and honest with them to reassure their fears and try to see where their coming from every once in a while.

They Love You

Even if you mange to F-up to epic proportions and your parents are so disappointed in your actions, always know that they do love you more than life itself. There’s nothing that you can say or do that’s going to alter that, ever. Sometimes our mind might try trick us in to believing otherwise or we might have earned some justifiable ire, but they love you unconditionally. So, tell them when you need them even if it feels like the most impossible thing in the whole world.

Carve A Pumpkin

We have become very American and obsessed with pumpkin patches. See if you have one locally. If not head to Aldi where they have a huge selection of pumpkins that start from on .99c.

Watch Scary Movies

We already put together a list of the best halloween movies to give you some inspo. A viewing of Hocus Pocus is a non-negotiable must!

Listen To The Nightmare Before Christmas Soundtrack

“This is Halloween, everybody give a scream”

Tim Burton is the King of Halloween. Yes, he has made a tone of gothic inspired movies, but if you ask us The Nightmare Before Christmas is his masterpiece. The soundtrack is truly incredible. Helmed by the famed Danny Elfman it includes the iconic “This Is Halloween“,which needs to be blasted non-stop today. But “Jack’s Lament” and “Jack’s Obsession” are truly incredible. Sorry, we’ll stop fan-girling now!

Binge-watch Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

We’ve hyped this a lot, but Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is now on Netflix. The series has some seriously creepy vibes and is perfect Halloween viewing material.

Bake Something Spooky

Just because you can’t go trick-or-treating anymore doesn’t mean that you can’t indulge in the candy side of Halloween! Pinterest has been fuelling our ideas. We love the look of these bat bites. Also, these mummy brownies look delish and super easy to make!

If you’re looking for some more ideas, we have loads pinned to our Halloween board.

5 Things You Can Do When You Turn 18

Hailey Baldwin’s super sweet 18!

So, you’ve turned 18. Congrats on being an adult now!

Yes, we all know that you can purchase alcohol now that you’re 18 (the novelty will wear of very soon!), but what else can you do? It turns out you can do a lot!

Here are 5 things you can do when you turn 18 that don’t involve drinking…

Vote!

Congratulations, you are now eligible to vote in elections! It’s a big power and responsibility and one that you’ll get to use pretty soon with the Presidential Elections coming up. During the recent Referendum to Repeal the 8th it was the youth vote that really rallied and secured the landslide result. Your vote really does count, so make sure that you’re on the Register of Electors. Here’s how you can register to vote in Ireland.

Play The Lotto

We know everyone relishes being able to buy that first legal drink, but seriously how cool would it be to become a millionaire on your 18th birthday?! The dream. Do it for the LOLs and remember us at missy.ie fondly if you win!

Sign Up For On Organ Donation Card

One of the things that you can do when you turn 18 is sign up for a free Donor Card. Please do this. At the moment we still have a clause that you must opt-in to donate your organs instead of opting out. It’s a bit morbid to think about it, but one person can save up to 8 lives. You simply sign up for the free card and then place it in your purse just incase anything ever happens. You can also tick the box on your driving licence to indicate your wish to donate your organs. Don’t forget to tell your friends and family your wishes too and also encourage them to sign up. You can pick up a card in Chemists or you can sign up by going to organdonation.ie.

Give Blood

Even if you’re a bit squeamish when it comes to blood we would urge you to still consider donating blood. It’s actually such an easy process. It doesn’t hurt and you don’t even have to look if you don’t want to. Also, you get biscuits, crisps and tea afterwards!! You never know when you or someone who you love may need a blood transfusion – they’re actually far more common than you would think and supplies regularly run low. Check out giveblood.ie to find out where and when the next local blood drive is. Bonus points if you rope in a family member too!

Get Your Garda Age Card

Don’t be that person who brings their passport an a night out, it never ends well. Sign up for a Garda Age Card and that way it will always be on you incase you need it for ID.
