This Is The Correct Order To Apply Your Skincare

Team Missy

With so many products on offer, it can be so hard to know how you’re supposed to apply all your lotions and potions.

Well, fear not, missy.ie is here with your ultimate cheat sheet, so you know which order to apply your skincare.

Morning Skincare Routine

Step 1 – Cleanser

Cleansing in the morning is like a wake-up call for your skin. It doesn’t need the full works like it does in the evening, but it still needs to be properly prepared for the day ahead. Go for something in a cream or balm that allows you to really work it into the skin.

Skingredients PreProbiotic Cleanse and OSKIA Renaissance Cleansing Gel are high on our list of cleansing loves!

Step 2 – Toner

Some people seem to have a bit of a love/hate relationship with toners, but we love them! No matter how much you try there is always going to be residue from your cleanser left on your skin after cleansing, toner removes that.

Go for a gentle toner in the morning such as PIXI Rose Tonic. Or even pick up a bottle of Rosewater in the chemist for a natural and calming alternative that’s also budget friendly!

Step 3 – Serums

If you have zero skin concerns you can probably skip this step.

The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% is great for those who suffer with oily skin and breakouts.

If you’re looking to hydrate your skin Glossier Super Bounce is great.

Step 4 – Moisturiser

It’s so super important that you use SPF every single day. Yes, even in the dead of winter. There are still UV rays that will cause irreparable damage to your skin. So, if you want to always have youthful looking skin use a moisturiser with SPF daily.

Missy loves Image Skincare Prevention Daily Matte Moisturiser Oil Free Spf 32

If your skin is super dry, you might want to apply a more hydrating moisturiser on its own. You can’t go wrong with CeraVe Moisturising Lotion For Dry To Very Dry Skin.

Step 5 – Eye cream

It’s never to early to jump on the eye cream bandwagon!

We really like NIP + FAB Bee Sting Fix Eye Cream for a budget friendly one, Glossier Bubblewrap or Kiehl’s Super Multi-Corrective Eye Cream.

Step 6 – Sunscreen (if your moisturiser doesn’t contain SPF)

If you don’t want to use a moisturiser with SPF combined it’s important that you apply it now before you start your makeup. Yes, some foundations have SPF in them but it’s not enough.

Try Skingredients Skin Shield SPF 50 PA+++ – this had a lovely peachy glow to it or Glossier Invisible Shield.

Evening Skincare Routine

Step 1 – Cleanse one

Your first cleanse essentially removes surface dirt such as makeup and grime from the day (eww!). As you are going to be washing it off and following up with another cleanse there is literally no reason to spend a fortune on this product.

Garnier Oil Infused Micellar Water is the bomb as is The Cleanse-Off Mitt.

Step 2 – Cleanse two

This is the cleanse that actually cleans your skin and helps maintain it, so its way more important than the first cleanse. You can use the same cleanser as you used in the morning, unless otherwise recommended.

Step 3 – Masks or peels (once a week)

To keep your skin in tip-top shape you should try to set aside two evenings a week to pamper the hell out of it. Depending on your skin needs try to rotate between exfoliating and a mask. (Don’t try do these on the same evening as it can be way too harsh on your skin).

We highly rate The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution which makes you look like Kim KW getting a vampire facial, but it’s so, so good for achieving radiating skin. Sensitive gals might want to be careful with it. If it tingles too much start with applying it for 3-4 minutes and build up to the recommended 10 minutes.

If you suffer from oily skin, breakouts, or pores the size of craters try The Bodyshop Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask.

If you have dry and tired skin try Glamglow Thirstymud Hydrating Glam To Go Treatment.

Step 4 – Toner

Chemical exfoliators are all the rage at the moment. We adore Pixi Glow Tonic. Use this alternating nights (and not on the same night if you’re using a chemical peel!). It’s also super essential that you wear SPF daily if you are using chemical products.

Step 5 – Serums

Again depending on what your skin type and issue is will dictate which serums you choose. Again we are beyond obsessed with the whole Ordinary range. If you suffer from breakouts The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution is definitely for you. If your skin is on the dryer side we recommend The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5.

Step 6 – Moisturiser

Look, skincare can be expensive, if your morning moisturiser does not have SPF in it you can totally use it again at night. Although a slightly heavier consistency is recommended for night-time. If your budget allows look to see if there is a corresponding night cream to go along with your day cream.

Step 8 – Oils

Facial oils are a greta way to add a real boost to your skin. There are so many to choose from depending on your skin concern.

The Ordinary Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil is a great all-rounder. Or for a bit of a splurge the Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate is a great pick.

Step 8 – Eye cream

When it comes to the correct order to apply your skincare, people tend to get confused. Applying eye cream should always be your last step. You should only apply a tiny bit and pat it in – no need to rub it in!

Use the same eye cream as you do in the morning to save!

Did you know the order to apply your skincare before now?
