Summer Getaways – My Top 5 2019 Destinations

Top 5 2019 DestinationsOkay, so I know it’s still only February, but I can’t be the only one who is ready to ditch their winter wardrobe and start browsing bikinis. Whether you’re planning a family holiday, a post-leaving cert celebration or a getaway with the girls, NOW is the best time to start planning in order to bag the best bang for your buck. Here are my top 5 2019 destinations I recommend this summer…

1. Budapest

Budapest has grown in popularity over the past few years, and there are good reasons why. When booked early, return flights to Budapest in late June/July range from €150-€200 maximum for 1 week, which is pretty good as it is peak season. You’ll never run out of things to do in Budapest. From the beautiful architecture to the thermal baths, once you get to Budapest, you may never want to leave. Be warned.

2. Iceland

Having recently just ticked this on off the bucket list myself, I cannot recommend visiting this country enough. However, one thing I will say is that if you are hoping to travel to Iceland, you will need to prep in advance. And by prep I mean SAVE SAVE SAVE. I had always heard it was an expensive country, but don’t think I really realised just how expensive. It can be done on a budget however by doing things like your own food shop rather than eating out every night. Unless you can afford to pay between €13-€15 for soup, in that case, live it up! The scenery is unbelievable and the Blue Lagoon is just as amazing as it looks in pictures. The weather is a bit like Ireland; unpredictable. Do plenty research before you go!

3. Malta

Ah, Malta. Surrounded by clear turquoise waters and sandy beaches, explore the winding streets through the city, take a day trip to some of the surrounding islands such as Gozo and have a go at some cave diving then visit the Ggantija Temples – they pre-date the Egyptian pyramids! Malta does not seem to be overly-expensive either, hooray! I don’t know about you, but I’m already planning a one-way trip.

4. Positano, Italy

The postcard-perfect colourful town of Positano in Italy along the Amalfi Coast has been slowly growing in popularity. The town is beaming with idyllic beaches, little boutiques and amazing food. This location is perfect for a lai-back holiday retreat. If you’re the type who prefers to stay busy on your holidays rather than relax, why not hike along God’s Path, or visit some of the other towns nearby. As Positano is becoming increasingly touristy, if you would rather visit the city minus the hustle and bustle, consider visiting during the off-peak season – it’s still just as breathtaking outside the summer months.

5. Croatia

If I could pack up my belongings in the morning and move anywhere in the world, it would probably be Croatia. The town of Zadar may be overshadowed by its capital Zagreb and others like Dubrovnik and Split, but don’t let it slip under the radar. Cobbled streets, located by the seaside and scorching summers are not all they have to their advantage, the people are helpful and friendly too which is always a bonus when going somewhere you are unfamiliar with. While staying in Zadar and you take a boat trip out to one of the many surrounding islands or visit some of the national parks such as Plitvice or Krka. Best of all, Croatia won’t break the bank and while I was there, affording to eat out every night of the week was never an issue. Definitely one you will need to add to your travel list.

10 Ways To Make Your Makeup Last

10 Ways To Make Your Makeup Last

You spend an eternity perfecting your makeup, only to look in the mirror two hours letter to see it morph into something from a horror movie. First World Problems, we know. But it’s so annoying! And keeping your makeup in-tact is especially tricky during the summer heat.

But fear not, missy.ie is here to  share some tips and tricks to help make your makeup last, no matter the weather situation.

1. Skin Prep

How well your makeup lasts is already being determined before you even apply your makeup! Your skin care is a huge part of the process, so don’t neglect it. Exfoliation is key to prepping your skin for makeup application – the smoother the surface, the more even it can be applied and therefore the longer it lasts. Missy Loves Soap & Glory Scrub Your Nose In It Pore Refining Facial Scrub. Moisturising is also super important as it helps with keeping your skin hydrated. If you suffer from oily skin it’s even more important that you chose the correct moisturiser to help control oil production. Missy Loves Image Daily Matte Moisturise SPF 32.

2. Prime Time

Try to get an oil-free, water-based primer; this will help your foundation from slipping or moving around. Primers help “seal in” your moisturiser to give you a blank canvas effect when applying your foundation. This helps prevent your makeup from “slipping off” during the day. Missy Loves Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer and NYX Professional Makeup Shine Killer.

The same principle applies to eyeshadow and although there are some great eyeshadow primers on the market like Too Faced Shadow Insurance Primer and Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, we highly rate using a concealer all over the eye area to act as a base. Missy Loves Liquid Camouflage High Coverage Concealer by Catrice.

3. Make Foundation Last

Use an oil-free foundation to ensure that it stays put. Oil based products make it more likely that makeup will “slide” out-of-place. If you have dryer skin, make sure you moisturise well before using an oil-free foundation. Missy Loves Revlon Color Stay Foundation.

4. Layer It

Less really is more if you want to make your makeup last all day. Try using a Beauty Blender to apply light layers to create a smooth and even complexion. Building up your makeup products in light layers will make it last way longer than applying one heavy layer, and it always looks more natural too. Try applying a light, even layer first and then “top up” any additional areas that you feel might need a tad more coverage. There’s no point in caking lots of makeup on an area that simply doesn’t need it, only for it to “slide” off later on.

5. How To Eyeshadow In Place

To keep to eyeshadow in place and to stop it creasing, dip your eyeshadow brush in a priming spray before applying on eyelids. This is a great trick when applying a shimmery eye shadow. Not only does it help lock down the pigment to last all day, it also gives a ‘foiled’ effect to the eyeshadow. Missy Loves NYX Professional Makeup Makeup Setting Spray.

6. Wear Waterproof

Opt for a waterproof mascara to keep your eyes smudge free all day long. Mascaras and eyeliners tend to smudge under the eyes easily in warm environments. Try a waterproof formula so that you don’t get the ‘raccoon effect’ after a few hours. Also make an effort to keep your hands away from your eyes, which is way tricky than it sounds, amirite?

7. Set It

To make your makeup last all day, apply a powder to set both your foundation and the concealer under your eyes. Baking has become hugely popular as a way to set makeup. We talked about it a bit more previously. This not only mattifies by soaking up excess oil left on the skin, but it will also set your makeup for way longer. Missy Loves Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder and Revolution Bake and Finish Powder as a budget alternative.

Think about getting a pressed powder so you can take it with you to soak up oil throughout the day. Missy Loves NYX Professional Make Up High Definition Finishing Powder.

8. Setting Spray Is A Must’

A setting spray is the key component to make your makeup last. Setting sprays are great because they act as a “seal” for makeup. Setting Sprays are also great for refreshing makeup throughout the day. Missy Loves the hyped MAC Prep + Prime Fix Mini as it’s great to pop in your bag and it’s far more affordable that the big bottle.

9. Blot It

Using blotting papers to soak up oil during the day is great, but be careful as sometimes they can remove the makeup along with the shine. Instead of using blotting papers, try using Mini Miracle Complexion Sponges to soak up unwanted shine throughout the day. And they’re super handy to keep in your bag!

10. Keep the essentials with you

To keep your makeup looking fresh all day long, keep the essential products in a bag to touch up throughout the day. Make sure to keep your Mini Miracle Complexion Sponges with you to soak up unwanted shine, your lipstick to reapply lightly and your pressed lightweight powder to touch up by lightly tapping the product into the skin. Always select budget versions of your favourite products to keep in your bag, especially on nights out to avoid dealing with the horror of something expensive going missing. If we had a euro for every time we’ve lost our Velvet Teddy…😭.

5 YA Books You Have To Read This Summer

There’s just nothing like sitting in the sun on a hot, summers day reading a book!

Whether your making the most of the fine weather or if you’re looking for something to keep you engrossed on holiday, here are the 5 YA books you have to read this summer…

Eve Of Man by Giovanna and Tom Fletcher

We already chatted about Eve Of Man, but we loved it so much we are more than willing to talk about it again.

This is the first book in a trilogy by author Giovanna Fletcher and her husband, Tom. You may know Tom from his time in McFly/McBusted and his seriously impressive Wedding Speech. The book follows two narrators, Eve and Bram. Eve is pretty darn special because she’s the first girl born in FIFTY YEARS. So, basically the future of humanity rests on her shoulders. No pressure! Eve has always accepted her fate and never questioned her life cut off from the rest of the world. Until she meets Bram. Then she starts to realise that life mightn’t be what it seems.

Eve Of Man really gets you thinking about the future, humanity and our morals. It feels very current with a lot of talk about the TV adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale. It’s full of action and adventure and a few plot twists. We can’t wait for book 2!

War Storm by Victoria Aveyard

The 4th and final (sob!) part of The Red Queen series is HUGE, so it’s definitely going to keep you occupied. The story continues on from where it left off in King’s Cage with Mare dealing with Cal’s betrayal (we’re seriously still not over that!) The problem is they’re going to have to learn to work together to bring down Cal’s evil half-brother, Maven. Awkward! The book is kinda full on, which shouldn’t be a surprise considering the kingdom is in full-on war mode. Prepare for a lot of drama, action and some shocking character deaths! We’re still thinking about the ending! If you haven’t already read the other 3 books you’re in for a serious treat!

I Was Born For This by Alice Oseman

For Angel Rahimi, life is only about one thing: The Ark – a pop-rock trio of teenage boys who are currently taking the world by storm. Being part of The Ark’s fandom has given her everything – her friendships, her dreams, her place in the world. Jimmy Kaga-Ricci owes everything to The Ark too. He’s their frontman – and playing in a band is all he’s ever dreamed of doing. But recently everything in his life seems to have turned into a bit of a nightmare. And when Angel and Jimmy are unexpectedly thrust together, they will discover just how strange and surprising facing up to reality can be.

I Was Born For This is about obsession and hero-worship and an internationally famous trans musician, it’s about a girl going to london for the first time to meet a friend she’s known for years but never met, it’s about three boys who started from nothing and became gods, it’s about teens who sit in bed reading fanfic and dreaming of being rich and famous and in love, dreaming of a life that is something beyond what they have. We just adored this book because it was so relatable. If you loved The Fault In Our Stars, this is for you!

The Surface Breaks by Louise O’ Neill

We’re calling it now; 2018 is the year of the Mermaid! August will see the release of the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. Watch the trailer now! And fuelling our obsession with all things mermaid is “The Surface Breaks” This is a feminist retelling of the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale by Missy.ie‘s fave, Louise O’ Neill. Be prepared to question everything about your beloved Ariel from the Disney movie.

The Surface Breaks tells the story of Gaia, a young mermaid who lives deep beneath the sea, off the cold Irish coast. Gaia dreams of freedom from her controlling father. On her first swim to the surface, she is drawn towards a human boy. She longs to join his carefree world, but how much will she have to sacrifice?

Once you really think about the fact that Ariel gave up everything in her life and changed her body to be with a man she didn’t even know, you just can’t stop.

Sami’s Silver Lining by Cathy Cassidy

Sami’s Silver Lining is a beautiful and thought-provoking book which tells the story of Sami, who is forced to flee his home in Syria for safety in England. Sami attempts to begin a new life but struggles to overcome the pain of the past. Memories of the long and dangerous journey across icy waters, armed with only his dad’s old coat, a flute and the hope of a brighter future, are never far away.

Although this is fiction, it’s obviously based around the true and scary situation that thousands of migrants find themselves in. Sami’ Silver Lining is more than just a holiday read and will stay with long after you finish the last page.

Gael Goer: Your Guide To The Gaeltacht

It’s time to say dia dhuit to your best summer ever!

Whether it’s your first time or you’re an old pro, a stint in the Gaeltacht has the possibility to change your life. New friends, new challenges and new experiences are just around the corner. What are you waiting for? The Gaeltacht is some of the best craic you’ll ever have.

Here’s your guide on how to have the best time at the Gaeltacht and what you need to pack.

Make Friends

If you’re lucky enough to be attending the Gaeltacht with your posse don’t roll up like you own the place. It can be especially intimating to attend the Gaeltacht on your own, so try make a special effort with those who might by flying solo. People can often be very shy, so take the time to get to know everyone properly.

And if you’re that person flying solo, don’t worry you won’t be the only one. Prepare yourself in advance to really try your best to put yourself out there and make friends. Don’t be afraid to be the first person to say dia dhuit. If you’re normally the quiet cailín at home this is your chance to break out a brand new you! Nobody knows you and you can be whoever you want to be.

Even if you’re going with your group of gals, mentally prepare yourself to be really confident in case you all get separated when being placed in dorms or when playing activities.

Beat The Homesickness

Feeling a bit anxious about being away from home, especially if it’s your first time, is perfectly normal. The Gealtacht can be overwhelming. Being thrown in and expected to socialise with brand new people is the stuff of nightmares for a lot of people. Give it a chance. The first few days you might feel lonely or out-of-place, but don’t give up on it too soon. Don’t be afraid to bring little bits of home with you like pictures or your comfy pillow. Depending on the rules you mightn’t have constant access to Snapchat, so bring a stationary set and some stamps to post some letters home.

Béarla Is Banned

If you go to Irish college expecting it to be a holiday, you’re going to get a massive wakeup call. The odd slip up will be forgiven, and you’ll be helped out if you don’t know a word, but if you persist in speaking as Béarla, you will be sent home. Yikes! Put a big effort in to try speak Irish as much as possible, it’s half the fun of being in the Gaeltacht anyway. Don’t be afraid to break out the foclòir or throw in a few focal Béarla in your sentences.

As Geailge le do thoil

Yes, the Gaeltacht is lots of craic, but at the end of the day you are there to improve the ol’ Geailge. Bring your Irish books and copies with you (but for the love of God don’t lose them or you’ll be in trouble with your múinteoir come September) You’ll find over the weeks that they’ll make more sense as you learn more and more.

Don’t allow Irish to scare you, no one will care as long as you are making an effort. If there’s a particular area of the language that really stresses you – we bet it’s the moth coinniollach, jot it down and ask your cinnire or Bean and Ti when you get a moment alone with them. Sometimes it can really help having something explained to you outside of the usual school setting. Not the mention the fact that you are immersed in the Irish language and culture for 3 weeks. Seriously, you’ll be fluent by the end and won’t want to go back to speaking as Béarla.

Some Advice For Packing

When it comes to your wardrobe, be practical. Pack an assortment of stuff – from Ts, to shorts and jeans and hoodies. Be prepared for all-weather. Pack things that you can mix and match easily. It’s not exactly school, but there will still be a certain expectation about dress codes.

Don’t over pack. Not only will you look ridiculous rocking up with so many bags, it will just be annoying to sort through – especially if you don’t have a wardrobe. Be honest with what you need. If you have something that you’re not sure you might need or extras leave them on your bed at home and you can easily ask her parents to bring them during parents weekend.

There are often fancy dress parties and of course the Céilís, so make sure that you bring clothes to wear for them.

The Essentials When Packing For The Gaeltacht

  • Extra underwear is always, always a good idea! Buy a few new packs in Penneys.
  • Don’t bring anything valuable or sentimental. With so many girls living in close quarters things are bound to get accidentally mixed up.
  • Magazines, books, your phone (gasp!) and spray deodorants may be off the agenda, so check what’s allowed before you pack.
  • Invest in packing cubes to make the most out of your suitcase, but to also keep everything organised. Also bring a bag to keep your dirty laundry in.
  • You might not be allowed to have your phone on you 24/7 so pack a disposable camera (how old skool!) to make sure that you capture all the memories.
  • Stock up on all toiletries before you go – think pads/tampons, deodorant, plasters, bug spray and hay fever meds.
  • If you’re a fussy eater it might be an idea to bring some food you can store, just in case you don’t like what’s on offer.
  • If you’re a dab hand at any instrument make sure that you pack it. Not only can you jam at night with your new pals, but you’ll get to show off at the Céilís.
  • Taking a shower becomes like a marathon sprint. Pack dry shampoo and 2 in 1 shampoo/conditioner.
  • Face wipes are always great to have on hand, as well deodorant wipes.
  • Don’t forget to bring a water flask with your name written on it, so it doesn’t get mixed up with anyone else’s. Eww!
  • A lot of Gaeltacht houses can be quite old, so bring 4 socket extension lead to stop any arguments over who gets to use the socket and when.

3 Outfits To Inspire Your Summer Holiday Wardrobe

shorts 1

I always seem to get a little bit frustrated when it comes to putting together my summer holiday wardrobe. I often think there’s no point in buying anything new as the weather in Ireland doesn’t really allow for much of a summer, and therefore any new purchases are kind of redundant. When shopping for clothes to pack for a summer holiday, I consider three things:

Practicality

Is it going to fold nicely and actually fit in my carry-on suitcase (along with twenty other unnecessary items of clothing)? Will the wrinkles fall out of it when I hang it up or will it require an iron? All this sounds mundane but walking around in a dress with loads of wrinkles isn’t very aesthetically pleasing (always thinking about the ‘gram).

Wearability

Is this a piece of clothing I can get away with at home? There’s no point in shelling out a fortune for the newest on trend piece and realising Irish weather does not permit the wearing of such items at home!

Price

As I said, when it comes to purchasing holiday clothes it’s best to stick with the cheap(ish) and cheerful, especially if they are bits you won’t wear at home and/or only get a seasons wear out of.

With all that in mind these are my 3 top picks from my holiday outfits!

Top 3 Picks…

Co-ord 1
Co-ord

Co-ords are everywhere this season, so I jumped on this Pull & Bear number when I saw it on ASOS. It was relatively cheap, and I’ve already worn the top with mom jeans to suit the Irish weather. It also didn’t take up a lot of space in my luggage, and is a simple yet complete outfit.

dress

Next up, this tie back dress. I love the red gingham pattern on this dress, but it’s the scattered flowers on top of the gingham that really drew me towards it! The tie-back detailing above the cut out is also a nice touch.

shorts 2
shorts

Last but not least, these “paintbrush print” shorts. I honestly thought they were a leopard print, but Topshop says otherwise! Either way, they’re very cute. The fabric doesn’t cling to you, and the fact that they have a bit of a frill means they’re nice and airry. Perfect for summer! No 28 degree heat was going to interrupt my holiday! I paired it with a simple strappy crop top also from Topshop and a black pair of sandals. My favourite thing about these shorts? They can be styled with a black pair of tights and a chunky knit jumper when the winter rolls round. Win/win really!

How To Apply Fake Tan

Image via Isle of Paradise

Yes, it’s summer but us Irish cailíní know the true struggle of trying to get a golden touch to our pasty skin. And if you’re in any way smart you know that plonking yourself out in the sun is only going to result premature ageing. No thank you!

So, the obvious solution is to seek a tan from a bottle. The thing is, tanning can be a bit intimidating. The fear of it all going very wrong, especially before a big event, is very real.

But fear not, missy.ie is here to tell you how to apply fake tan the correct way to ensure a flawless result each and every time. The goal is to be a tanned goddess, not an orange umpa lumpa.

Whether you’re a total newbie to tanning or well seasoned in the art of applying fake tan, we have some of the best tips and tricks.

Here’s how to apply fake tan like a pro.

Prep Is Key

Tanning disasters can be in the making before you even open up the bottle of tan. It’s super important that you make sure that your skin is in tip-top shape before application.

  • Avoid shaving right before you apply tan. It’s best to shave the day before. When you shave your pores are left open and pores love nothing more than getting fake tan stuck in them. The result is not good.
  • The smoother your skin the better the application, so exfoliate and moisturise your skin daily in the lead up to your tan application. MISSY LOVES Vaseline Spray & Go Aloe Fresh and Soap & Glory Scrub ‘Em and Leave ‘Em Body Buff.
  • On the day of your tan application, don’t moisturise your body as it will act as a barrier and stop the tan absorbing. But you should apply a small amount of moisturiser to dry areas such as hands, elbows, knees and feet as well as any other dry patches, including anywhere you may have eczema or psoriasis, just before self-tan application. The moisturiser helps blends the tan, therefore reducing the chances of these areas going too dark.
  • Have a shower before you being applying the tan. You can use your normal shower get, but do not exfoliate right before applying tan.
  • Apply a coat of nail polish to your nails to stop the tan from staining them.
  • Apply some Vaseline to your brows and hairline line if you’re tanning your face.

A couple of our faves 😍✌️ 📸: @ebbamatilda

A post shared by Cocoa Brown Tan (@cocoabrowntan) on

Application

  • Use a tanning mitt to apply your tan.
  • If you’re a beginner, use a product with a guide colour (like Isle of Paradise Self-Tanning Mousse) to help show you where you have and haven’t applied the tan.
  • Work in lengthways motions, apply the product in clean sweeps. Circular motions can unevenly distribute product around the skin and leave you at risk of streaks in your final colour.
  • Leave your hands and feet until last and use only what product is left on your tanning mitt. Do not apply more product directly, just brush over the excess tan left on your mitt.
  • Make a downward pointing ‘claw’ with your hand so that the tan gets in between creases on your fingers. This will ensure you there are no white patches left.
  • When it comes to applying tan on your back, the internal saviour Penneys now has an applicator that you “shimmy” down your back. But when in doubt ask a friend or your mam.
  • Once you’re finished avoid the temptation to wash your hands. Instead use a face wipe to remove the tan from your palms, in between your fingers and your nails.

Maintenance

  • When you shower for the first time after applying tan you can use shower gel, but don’t exfoliate your skin.
  • Wait until days 2 or 3 after your tan application before you begin applying a moisturiser. If you moisturise your skin too early, it can cause the tan to fade too quickly.
  • A product like Cocoa Brown Chocolate Whip Oil Free Body Moisturiser can help maintain and extend your tan.

How To Cover Up Bad Tan

We’ve all been there! There’s nothing worse than waking up the next morning and you’ve got horrible patches! The best thing to do is hop in the shower and try scrub off any patches the best you can with a good body scrub and exfoliating mitt. To cover up any mistakes use some Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs.

The best fake tan for:

pale gals: Isle of Paradise Self-Tanning Mousse Light

beginners:  Cocoa Brown Gentle Bronze Gradual Tanning Moisturiser

looking like you’re just back from the Bahamas  bBold Xtra Dark Mousse

when you can’t commit: Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs

5 Things You Need To Survive The Irish Heatwave

After all the weather warnings we’ve had over the last 8 months, it’s a bit of shock to have a warning about HOT WEATHER. Hello Irish heatwave!

And sure don’t you know we’ll be complaining about the heat pretty soon, but in the meantime lets enjoy it!

It’s easy to underestimate the power of the sun, especially when you’re having fun with your friends. But we have some tips to keep yourself safe and cool. Plus the essentials that you’ll need to survive the Irish heatwave.

Waterproof Mascara

Waterproof mascara isn’t normally our fave because it just doesn’t give them same fluttery eyelashes as ordinary mascara, but it definitely becomes a necessity in warm weather. Being in and out of the water is sure to make your mascara stream off of you.

Let your skin breath in this weather and don’t clog it up with a whole face of makeup. And if you’re glamming for the ‘gram, just don’t. You don’t want pictures of your face melting off of you, trust us. Just apply some waterproof mascara and just a little bit of an eyebrow product and you’re good to go.  Essence I Love Extreme Volume Waterproof Mascara and Glossier Boy Brow are all you need during hot weather.

Suncream

Obvious is obvious, but for the love of KJ Apa put the suncream on! The only thing you are certain to see after an Irish heatwave is a lot of burnt skin. As a nation we just don’t seem to do sun protection well. But having red raw skin with that new dress is not going to be a good look.

For your face we highly rate the Image Skincare Prevention Daily Matte Moisturiser Oil Free Spf 32. It comes in two versions, hydrating and matte. The matte will go along way in helping keep shine at bay. It’s actually recommended that you wear SPF 365 days of the year, so this is actually a great investment. It’s lovely under makeup too.

Ultrasun is the way to go when it comes to sun cream. This is water-resistant and if applied correctly can last you the whole day. We have spotted this in T.K Maxx from time to time, so make sure that you have a look there. Choose high factors and please forget the notions of getting a tan. These days tan comes in the form of a bottle and not skin cancer!

Lip Balm

You don’t know pain until you get sunburnt on your lips. It can cause blisters and can leave your lips peeling. Ouch!  Make sure that you layer on tons of moisturising lip balm. Bonus points for using something with and SPF. We love Burt’s Bees 100% Natural All-Weather SPF15 Moisturising Lip Balm. It’s safe to say that we’ll be putting the matte lip kits down for the next few weeks!

A Stunning Hat

Yes, the mammy was totally right in telling you to wear a hat. But all the insta models are wearing super fab hats, so we are down with that!

Getting sun burn on your scalp is not a nice experience. Not only can it cause severe headaches and sun stroke, but the skin on your scalp is quite sensitive and even the smallest amount of sun burn can make it extremely sore. Washing your hair and even brushing it can become a thing of torture. And then to make matters worse the skin on your scalp can start peeling. In all, it’s not good. And when you think about it sun burn on your scalp is going to be very hard to treat with after sun and the likes. So, just save yourself the bother and wear a hat. You’ll look super fab in the process! As always Penneys have some supper fab options. Also check out Accessorize.

Common Sense

Out of everything on this list this is probably the most important; have some common sense.

Have fun. In fact, have lots of it. But make sure that you’re being sensible at all times. Don’t swim in water without a lifeguard on duty. Sometimes it takes one strong person to say “I don’t think that this is a good idea” for other people to speak up and admit that they have doubts too.  Make sure that you put the suncream on because sunstroke isn’t cool. Drink lots of water. Keep the fur babies inside and make sure that they have lots of water. Let the parental unit know where you are at all times. Take a quick read of our how to stay safe on a night out because it’s sound advice for any outting with friends. It’s all fun and games until its suddenly not and you’ve found yourself in a bad situation.

It mightn’t seem like an obvious piece for mixing and matching clothes with, but hear us out. This can be dressed up for evenings with the gals by pairing it with a simple cami or lace top. You can also colour clash this with orange or yellow. Wear it with heels or simple flats. And of course you can pair it with tights come winter. Floral prints are also always a worthy investment because they never go out of fashion.

The Denim Jacket

If you don’t already have at least one denim jacket in your wardrobe, it’s time to invest. We picked this Frayed Vintage Wash Oversize Denim Jacket from Boohoo because we love the vintage vibes from it. It’s also oversized which means that it’s going to be perfect over bulkier clothing. A denim jacket really can take you anywhere. And for €29, this is a steal!

Things We Are Living For This Summer

Things We Are Living For This Summer copy

How is it summer? I mean don’t get us wrong, we are excited, but didn’t it roll in so quickly? It literally feels like 2 minutes ago that we were buried in snow!

Anyway, now that summer is here and exams are over (for some of us!) we can finally sit back and enjoy life.

Here are the things we are LIVING for this summer!

Movies

Crazy Rich Asians

The top spot for the movie we are most excited to see this summer goes to Crazy Rich Asians. Based on the book of the same name (quick, read it now!), the story revolves around the grand wedding between Singapore’s most eligible bachelor, Colin Khoo, and a fashion icon, Araminta Lee which is billed as the wedding of the year. New Yorker Rachel gets thrown in at the deep-end when she travels to Singapore to meet her BF’s family who just happen to be crazy rich. As you can see from the trailer it just looks amazing. Be prepared to become obsessed with traveling to Singapore!

Crazy Rich Asians out August 15

Ocean’s 8

We don’t know about you, but we have fatigue from all the superhero movies which suck-up time at the cinema. So, we are very excited to see an action-packed movie that doesn’t revolve in the Marvel universe. Ocean’s 8 looks like its going to be amazing (um, RIHANNA stars in it, so of course it’s automatically incredible!). If you haven’t seen the original movie with George Clooney, who is the brother of Sandra Bullock in the movie, get on it ASAP!

Ocean’ 8 is out June 18

Books

Eve Of Man Tom and Giovanna Fletcher missy.ie teen reads summer 2018

Eve Of Man by Giovanna and Tom Fletcher

We love us some YA here at missy.ie, but honestly it’s been a while since we’ve REALLY loved a new YA series. But that has all changed with the release of Eve Of Man. We were always going to give this a go because we are O.G McBusted fans and we just adore Giovanna Fletcher, but we were pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed Eve Of Man. Eve is the first girl born in 50 years and as a result is solely responsible for the future of humanity. She always accepted her fate, until she meets Bram.

Eve Of Man is based on a simple and plausible concept; what if no more women were born? Eve Of Man really draws you in and leaves your mind blown by how it could easily happen. It’s great read that doesn’t get too bogged down in over-doing the dystopian angle, which some YA novels can fall prey to. If you’re looking for a great holiday read, this is the one. We are already anticipating book 2!

Eve Of Man is out now.

Taylor Swift

Summer and music seem to go hand-in-hand and we are totally okay with that. While there are lots of festivals and events on around the country over the next few months we are super excited about the arrival of Taylor Swift on our Isle! If you weren’t lucky enough to grab some tickets when they originally went on sale, fear not there are still some tickets available to see Taylor in Croke Park on the 15th of June.

Buy tickets here.

Fashion

Orange Is The New Black

We are totally ok with saying goodbye to our black-wares (until Autumn, that is) in favour of some summer brights. And we are particularly loving the colour orange which we have spotted in numerous summer collections. See some of our fav picks below.

Beauty

Glossier

The big news in the beauty world this summer is that Glossier has FINALLY arrived in Ireland. And we are excited! Usually Ireland is forgotten about when it comes to big beauty brands and it can take ages for it to become available here. But fun fact: we are part of a very exclusive club in having Glossier deliver to us. At the moment Glossier only ships to the U.S and the U.K. And now Ireland has joined that list! Special or what?? In terms of what to buy we did a review on Glossier back in November. Our number one pick is the Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser. Seriously, try it!

June Editor’s Letter

After last months mammoth Editor’s Letter I’m going to keep this short and sweet!

But firstly can I just say how amazing it was to witness the YES vote last weekend?! It was definitely a day for the history books. I know it’s a very divisive subject for people, but I’m just so happy that women will now have a choice in Ireland.

Summer is the official theme of Missy this June. I know…groundbreaking.

I always loved the summer additions of teen magazines back in my day (that makes me sound SO old!) They were always so fun and full optimism. So, we’re definitely going to be taking some old skool inspo from them on missy.ie!

This month we’ll be getting you in the holiday mood with lots of articles and our first fashion shoot!!! AND towards the end of the month we’ll be turning our focus to The Debs. We are super excited to show you what we’ve been working on. Also, if you’re looking for a summer job, we’ve already got you covered!

On a more serious and sadder note, I just wanted to take the time to acknowledge how sad and scary the news has been over the past few weeks for the young people of Ireland. Please mind yourself. We live in a scary world and it’s important to always take your safety into account. Sadly, we can’t prevent everything in life, but taking precautions like the ones Jessie spoke about here is a good start. If you feel uncomfortable or you’re not happy in someone’s company get yourself out of there with as little fuss as possible. From my experience your instincts are nearly always right. So, listen to them.

To those of you who just finished up school – well done! And the best of luck to everyone sitting their JC or LC. We are thinking about you and lighting all the candles.

Have a fab June!

How To Have The Best End Of Year EVER!

You made it! We bet you thought this day would never come! In one way September feels like two seconds ago (we launched Missy on the 1st of September!). But at the same time it feels like an eternity ago. But alas, the school year is FINALLY over! And we are so ready to say hello to Summer!

Here’s how to finish the school year on a high-note to make sure that you have the best end of year EVER!!

Study For Those Exams!

Yes, sorry to be dull, but put in that extra work now and you will be so glad you did! There’s nothing like the dread of your school report card arriving home to put a dampener on your summer. Do yourself and the parental unit proud by putting in the work for the next 2 weeks. If you need some help in the study department check out our top tips to better!

And if you are studying like a mad women take breaks and be kind to yourself. Balance is key.

End On A Positive Note

Try make amends with anyone who you might be on the outs with. That teacher who you just can’t seem to jell with? Make a big effort to be present in mind and body during class and go out of your way to be polite and pleasant – although we’ve sure that you always are anyway! Chances are you might just have the same teacher again next year, so putting in some effort now to dazzle them will go along way. Also, teachers talk!

If things aren’t great between you and a friend try smooth things out before the holidays begin. 3 months is a long time. And what started out as a small disagreement can grow during the summer through disconnecting unintentionally. Mend your fences now. It will also ensure that your other friends don’t feel totally awkward for the summer and that no one is left out of awesome plans.

Be Organised

Don’t leave any last minutes jobs until the last day of school. Don’t be that person running around like a headless chicken on the last day. Make sure that your locker is cleaned well before the last day. Try bring home everything bit by bit so it’s not a mammoth task.

Sort out your books and make sure that you have everything that you’re supposed to and that you don’t accidentally have someone elses book! Nothing worse than realising that you’re missing that copy of Macbeth come September. We know these tasks are super basic and boring but getting them out-of-the-way sooner rather than later will unsure that you can soak up the fun atmosphere during the last days of school.

Make Plans Now

It’s easy to let the summer pass you by with the best of intentions of doing lots. But before you know it you’re sitting back in that classroom in September wishing you had made the most of your summer. Make plans with your friends now. Take a look at websites such as ticketmaster.ie and eventbrite.ie to see if there are any cool events happening over the summer. Also check out to see if there are any festivals or events taking place in your local area. We will be sharing our ultimate summer bucket list in June so make sure that you check back for it! And we’re just going to put this out there – there MIGHT be a Missy event happening during the summer so keep your eyes peeled!

Enjoy The Moment

If you’re still struggling with your confidence it can be hard to just enjoy yourself when everyone else is buzzing for the end of year. Make an effort to join in conversations and if your friends are taking our advice above make sure that you let them know that you would like to join in.

Hop into those pictures even if you hate having your photo taken. Trust us, you’ll regret not having these memories to look back on and share in the years to come. It’s a total lie that school is the best years of your life, but when the end of year rolls around there is a definite excitement in the air and they can be some of the funniest memories that you have of school. Enjoy the monet. You’ve earned it.

Are you doing anything exciting to make the end of year?
