Looking Back On The Decade

Team Missy

And just like that 2019 comes to a close and also brings the end of a decade.

Join Team Missy looking back on their favourite moments of the decade…

TV Show

I know Gossip Girl is technically a 00’s show, but I’m still going to pick it as it only ended in 2012 and it was the best, ever. I’m not too sure if I’m sold on the reboot happening in 2020 though!

Movie

I’m honestly so in love with the The Grand Budapest Hotel! It’s witty, fun and a bit mad. The cast is incredible, it’s beautifully shot and what a soundtrack! It’s just a really great movie!

A very close second was The Guard – I cry with laughter every single time I watch it!

Artist

I started the decade off as a huge Taylor Swift fan after she released Fearless in 2008; then I totally fell off the bandwagon, sorry but the reputation era was not great, BUT now I’m finishing off 2019 firmly back as a Taylor fan – Lover has been playing non-stop on my Spotify for weeks now. Fingers crossed for an Irish concert date in 2020!

Book

I found this one really hard to choose, but I think I’m going to go for The Infernal Devices series! Usually spin-off series are not great and although I enjoyed The Mortal Instruments I went into The Infernal Devices with really low expectations, but it was so, so good! I even re-read the series a few months ago and it was just as good! Roll on the release of Chain of Gold in March!

Song

I first heard Dancing On My Own by Robyn on season 4 of Gossip Girl and honestly I don’t think I’ve stopped playing it since.

Political advancement

Repealing The 8th

Glow Up

From the little sister of Kim K in the background of KUWTK to a beauty billionaire, Kylie Jenner has had some decade. You might say it was the decade of Kylie “realising stuff”.

Invention

Missy.ie of course! Is that cheating? Probably.

Iconic moment

Tom Holland lip-syncing to Rihanna’s “Umbrella” on Lip Sync Battle – it was like he waited his whole life for that moment!

Fashion Trend That Should Stay In The 10’s

Disco Pants! Need I say any more?

TV Show

I’m going to with The Bold Type for this one. It’s a relatively new show, having first graced our screens in 2017. It follows the lives of three friends, Kat, Jane and Sutton who live in NYC and work at women’s magazine Scarlett. The dream right? I’ve found myself recommending this show time and time again, so it’s definitely my favourite of the decade!

Movie

This one was a struggle… but I’m going to have to go with Spider-Man: Homecoming. I’m a big Marvel fan, and this movie in particular is just one that you can just stick on and enjoy time and time again. The second instalment Spider-Man: Far From Home is also great. Plus Tom Holland AND Zendaya, what’s not to love?!

Artist

It’s got to be Taylor Swift! Technically she was a firm favourite in the 00’s, but throughout this decade I’ve only grown to love her music even more! Taytay knows how to produce a great bop, and sure what more could you want?

Book

The Woman In The Window by A.J Finn, was definitely a stand out read for me this decade, it’s so so good! I’ve read many a murder mystery but this really keeps you on your toes throughout, twisting and turning all over the shop!

Song

Again, relatively new (am I struggling to remember the early 10’s? Possibly…) but Paper Rings by Taylor Swift is beyond catchy. It also has a very cute message behind it!

Political advancement

Has to be the Repeal the 8th movement.

Glow Up

Kim Kardashian. Kim’s style was a little questionable when KUWTK first premiered and by 2010 not much had improved. Now Kim K is a style icon, albeit still questionable but this time it’s chic.

Invention

Instagram, to say I’m obsessed would be an understatement!

Iconic moment

I can’t choose just one… But the standout iconic moments of the past decade were certainly the Royal weddings! First there was Wills and Kate in 2011, then Harry and Meghan in 2018.

Fashion Trend That Should Stay In The 10’s

High-Low dresses –  not going to lie, I was obsessed in the early 10’s but looking back now, this was not a good look…

TV Show

Looking back at all the TVs shows I watched in the past decade, from ages 10 to 19, they have changed a lot, but one that managed to stick out was ‘SKAM’ a Norwegian teenage drama show, depicted real life issues that the ages felt without the unrealistic twists that some other shows relied upon.

Movie

A film that I think shaped parts of the past decade was “Call Me By Your Name” where we saw a beautiful book come to life on screen like a simple home film, but also a gripping and heart wrenching tale of love.

Band

One Direction rose from the ashes of X-Factor and took over the world in 2011, only to split in 2015 and the world cried but all was not lost as each member has continued with their own impressive and unique style of music. We’re just hoping for a reunion in the new decade.

Book

Irish author Cecelia Ahern wrote a new series called Flawed, set in a dystopian future where it is literally illegal to be imperfect.

Song

Truth Hurts by Lizzo, the ultimate feel good, break-up or need a really good dance song.

Political Advancement

This decade was filled was many amazing political advance ya for Ireland. For one, we managed to get equal marriage rights in 2015 and then managed to Repeal The 8th Amendment which held a tight hold on Ireland for years.

Glow Up

See Also

A glow up we needed, but thy certainly didn’t was Lily Collins. The actresses has managed to age like fine wine.

Iconic moment

One of the more iconic moments of the decade was the British royal weddings, one in 2011 and the other in 2018 which gave us iconic dresses and brilliant celebrity meet-ups.

Invention

The Depop app has become one of the most used apps today and helps out hugely with sustainable fashion.

TV Show

Sherlock

There have been so many adaptations and versions of Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous novel but the BBC one is definitely my favourite. The show ran from 2010 to 2017 and while it only had 13 episodes it made every one of them count.

Movie

Brooklyn was definitely one of my favourite of the decade. Released in 2015, it was also one of Saoirse Ronan’s most commended performances and almost got her and Oscar.

Artist

Adele released two brilliant albums in the last decade that I listened to on repeat. 21 was released in 2011 and was followed by 25 in 2015.

Book

Asking For It Louise O’Neill

At Missy.ie we have been raving about this extraordinary novel and for good reason. This outstanding story is absolutely my book of the decade.

Song

Call Me Maybe was easily one of the most played songs at the beginning of this decade. The lyrics played around and around in my head for months on end and I still know every single one of them!

Political advancement

It was actually 2010 before civil partnership was first introduced in Ireland. This was followed in May 2015 by the landslide vote to legalise gay marriage.

Glow Up

Back in 2010 Kylie Jenner was just twelve years old and usually viewed in her more well known sisters shadows. Fast forward ten years and she is the youngest self made millionaire with her own make up range and over 155 million instagram followers.

Invention

The first iPad was launched in April 2010 and it quickly became a popular device due to its handy size. It was both bigger than a mobile phone but also more convenient than a laptop and multiple tech companies released their own versions.

Iconic moment

2018 Women’s Hockey World Cup

The Women’s Hockey team became the first Irish team to get to a Senior World Final in any field sport. The penalty shoot out to get them into the final went to sudden death and brilliant hockey was watched by hundreds of thousands of proud supporters.

Fashion Trend That Should Stay In The 10’s

Clear plastic boots were one of the most unusual trends of the past decade and that is where they should stay! Clouded with condensation on warm days and showing off patchy tan on others, I was not a fan of this footwear.
