Whether your Team Selena, Team Hailey, or Team I’ve No Idea What’s Going On, it seems you can’t escape the drama between Selena Gomez, Hailey Bieber, and all the celebs who have gotten involved. But what actually is going on?
The history
So we take it way back when we all just knew Selena as Alex Russo over on Disney Channel. A bright eyed Selena Gomez, still in her teens, began dating pop star Justine Bieber. Their on again off again relationship was constantly on the front of every magazine until they called it quits for the final time in 2018. It’s rumoured that during one of Jelena’s many breaks, Justin began dating Hailey Baldwin, a Hollywood nepo baby and the daughter of actor Stephen Baldwin. But as we know, he made his way back to Selena. Jelena reportedly called it quits for the last time in May 2018. But just two months later, after rekindling his romance with Hailey Baldwin, Justin Bieber announced his engagement to Hailey in July 2018. So Jelena is water under the bridge? Hmm…
The so-called drama
Social media went crazy when Justin and Hailey got engaged, with fans claiming Hailey ‘stole’ Justin from Selena. They even went digging to find pictures of Hailey meeting Justin when she was a regular Belieber like the rest of the world. There’s been rumoured feuds between Justin’s new beau and ex Selena from the second they got engaged, and it came to a point in 2019 where Selena had to call out her fans for disrespecting Hailey and Justin’s relationship.
Alas, the feud continued, and when Hailey Bieber spoke on the podcast Call Her Daddy late last year, host Alex Cooper asked Hailey if Justin ever asked Selena to speak to her fans about the online harassment they’d put Hailey through. Hailey replied that Selena doesn’t ‘owe me anything’, and that if her calling out her fans was something she felt she needed to do, ‘that would be amazing’.
All was right in the world again when in October 2022 Hailey and Selena were pictured TOGETHER at an Academy Museum Gala. They squashed the rumours of their lengthy feud and proved that women are stronger when they support one another.
The 2023 drama
Less than four months after they posed for snaps together in LA, the Hailey Selena feud fire was relit. In February, Selena Gomez posted a TikTok to her millions of followers, stating her recent eyebrow lamination had been overdone by accident, leaving her with a pretty crazy brow look. According to TikToker @devotedly.yours, Kylie Jenner posted a snap on her Insta story with the caption ‘This was an accident ?????’ over her eyebrow, before posting a screenshot of a video call with Hailey Bieber, only showing their eyebrows.
Fans quickly called Kylie out, leading her to comment on the TikTok stating “this is reaching… u guys are making something out of nothing, this is silly.” Selena even replied stating she was a fan of Kylie Jenner, but this didn’t stop the Insta detectives. After the brow situation, Selena knocked Kylie Jenner off her top spot to become the highest followed woman on Instagram.
All this drama led to Selena taking a break from social media. Fans wondered next was Justin Bieber’s Instagram story pointed at his ex, as he used the song ‘Calm Down’ in his post. Since this feud restarted in late February, Selena has gained millions of followers over on Instagram, with both Kylie Jenner and Hailey’s accounts slowly falling in numbers.
The devil works hard…
The devil works hard, but Kris Jenner works harder. We all know by now that momager Kris is an expert at cleaning up a PR mess, and this one is no different. Kylie’s niece North West was seen hanging out with Selena’s little sister Gracie on TikTok, where North and her mom Kim K share an account with over 15 million followers. Ahh, never a dull moment in the Kardashian/Jenner clan.
As of now, there’s been no more updates on the Hailey and Selena drama, but we all know we’re never too far away from another internet hot take.
