How To Upcycle Your Clothes

Ella Morley

How do people update their wardrobes without spending their savings? There is a simple answer which is becoming more popular daily, known as upcycling.

Upcycling is where you take an item you no longer want and turn it into something fabulous. Not only can you come up your own unique designs but it is also of great benefit to the environment as you are reusing clothes that might have otherwise ended up in the bin.

It’s also a great way to cut down on the over-consumption of fast fashion and be kinder to the environment.

You’ll Need…

First of all, grab the tools you need such as scissors, thread and anything else that you think could help revamp any of your old attire into something better. Make a plan. This will help you keep track of what you are doing. Now get cracking and most importantly of all have a bit of fun. You could even invite your friends to do the same and have a memorable upcycling night over Zoom.

Make A Dress Out of An Oversized T-Shirt

Oversized t-shirts are very comfortable to wear that’s for sure but how do you make it a tad more fashionable. There is plenty of inspiration to be found on the internet. Watch a YouTube tutorial on how to make them, scroll throughout Pinterest and find a design that would suit you or just go with your gut. Whatever you decide I am sure it will be wonderful.

Try Your Hand At Creating A New Duvet

Some garments have incredible sentimental value. They may represent a time when you were part of a sports team or hold the memories you made at a concert. T-shirts purchased at the world tour of a famous singer or band, or team uniforms often gather dust at the back of the wardrobe. Why not bring a bit of life back into them and have them on daily display? Bring the nostalgia back into the limelight and rejuvenate your clothes. This can require quite a bit of time and patience but is definitely worth it.

Frame It

This craft is simple but extremely effective. A scissors and some sticky tape are needed for this activity. To get started you will need an empty frame and of course the t-shirt you plan to use. Measure out what you need and cut up the garment to match this. Using the tape, stick it into the frame. Alternatively, you could just fold the t-shirt into the frame. Make sure you centre your new artwork correctly and voila. You have created a masterpiece.

Turn Jeans Into Shorts

Old jeans gotten too short? In need of a set of shorts for the summertime? You are in luck. Why not take these jeans and transform them into a stylish pair?  Jazz them up with an embroidered design to make a statement or if sewing isn’t for you then why not try some iron-on letters or glue on some bling?   A simple idea can bring joy to the plainest of clothes.

Not only will you feel super proud of yourself for creating something new, you will also be doing your bit for the environment. Your bank account will not have suffered and even if something does not turn out quite the way you imagined, you will be able to have plenty of fun along the way.
