How To Make Friends With Boys When You Go To An All Girls School

Team Missy

Going to an all girls school is fairly common practice in Ireland. And whilst the benefits of this has come up to much debate over the years, we know from our lovely Missy readers that not having any male friends is definitely a pitfall of an all female school campus.

Nearly every week we get a question relating to being friends with boys, and how to make friends with boys into our popular Instagram segment, We’re All Friends Here! So we decided it’s only best to lay it all out in black and white for you guys!

Here’s How To Make Friends With Boys If You Go To An All Girls School

Join A Club

A youth club, an art club, maybe a music club? Choose something you’re interested in, and see if there are any clubs or classes in your area. There will more than likely be boys attending the club or classes too, so naturally this is a great place to meet boys. Next is cementing the friendship! Ensure that you actually have an interest in the activity happening at the club or class before joining up. This way, you’ll already have a lot in common with the guys around you.

Take Up A Sport

Most sports are divided up between the two sexes. For example, boys will play against boys in hurling matches whereas girls will play against girls in camoige matches. Some sports are co-ed like tennis, boating or gymnastics. If you’ve always wanted to give a co-ed sport a go, now is your chance! You’ll reap the benefits of being active, and make friends along the way!

Get Used To Being Around Boys Your Age

If you’re in an all girls school, chances are you’re very used to being around a lot of female energy. Not to stereotype, but often it can be an adjustment when starting to hang out with boys your own age. If your friends have brothers or cousins around your age maybe try and hang with them and see how you get on. See what they’re interested in, and like talking about that way you can start conversations with boys you’d like to be friends with.

See If You Have Any Friends of Friends…

Speak with your friend group and enquire if anyone has any friends that are boys. Often befriending a friend of a friend is a good place to start as you already have something (or someone) in common. Maybe suggest you all hang out as a big group, and ask your friend to ask their guy friend if they could bring their friends along too. Sometimes it’s a lot easier to make friends in a group setting.

Be Yourself

So you’ve picked one of the above and you’re going to go make friends with boys, great! It’s now important to remember to be yourself, don’t pretend to be interested in something if you’re not, as starting a friendship on a bunch of lies isn’t exactly ideal. Remain calm and don’t panic about talking to boys, they’re just people and chatting to them like you would anyone else is key to starting off a great friendship!

Lastly, make sure that you’re making friends with boys for the right reasons. Having friends that are guys can be great, but if your intentions are to make any potential boy friends your boyfriend just be careful as mixing feelings with friendship doesn’t always end the way we’d like. We can’t all be Ross and Rachel unfortunately…
