Random Acts of Kindness Day: simple ways to make someone’s day
Kindness is so important, especially after the year we have had. A little kindness can go a long way.
You might not even realise how much it means to the person who receives it. As Princess Diana once said ‘Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.’
February 17 is Random Acts of Kindness Day. Here are some simple ways to make someone’s day all year around…
Give something back
It is important to give something back to your community. This can be achieved by simply volunteering your time to a non-profit organisation, planting a tree, picking up a piece of rubbish or any other of the numerous things you can do to help out. By giving back, you have made the world a better place and what’s more you will feel amazing doing it. You will find yourself building a better relationship with your community and grow your connections in doing so.
Volunteering is a great way to broaden your horizons and strengthens your empathy and compassion.
Be Genuine
Compliments are a great way to brighten someone’s day but too many takes away their meaning. Remember to always be sincere when complimenting someone.
Try where you can to make the positive comment specific to them and avoid generic fake phrases. It is usually easy to tell if someone means what they are saying and this will decipher whether they believe you. As the popular saying goes ‘if you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say anything at all’.
Nowadays it is very hard to come across a genuine compliment, so why not let the cycle begin with you.
Make it a habit
Make kindness a constant habit in your life. Do not be kind just because you want something or to get your own way. That defeats the purpose.
Random acts of kindness do not take place at a certain time but rather are spontaneous and unplanned. Making this a habit in your life will bring joy as you know you are making a difference to the lives of others.
Kindness is an amazing strength to have especially against those who do not offer the same in return. As the popular Selena Gomez song goes ‘Kill ’em with kindness’.
Go the extra mile
Going out of your way to say or do something kind for someone will make that person happier. To go the extra mile for someone shows that you truly, genuinely, care for them.
You never know how you affect another person but merely by doing this and staying kind you are guaranteed to make their life and the world a little better. This simple act will make you feel fantastic and bring great purpose and a sense of positivity into your own life.
Ask yourself what you can do to make a difference in someone’s life.
It costs nothing
While it might be nice to receive a shop bought present or bunch of flowers, being kind does not have to cost a thing. Giving someone a call or visiting a relative costs nothing yet means so much.
In this day and age people find themselves busy with work and often begin to neglect their priorities. Do not let this happen to you. Evaluate your life and make time for those you care about.
Remember to be kind to everyone you meet for there is always someone who needs it.
You will find that by being kind, people will begin to surround you and that when you begin to spread those positive vibes you will be making your own life as well as the world around you a better place to be.
