How To Make The Most of Transition Year

Alannah Murray

Transition Year can be the most boring year of your school life, or the best so far; it’s up to you.

But trust me, spending your entire year doing nothing can sound appealing until it comes around and you are bored out your mind and have nothing to show for your time.

Here are just some of the ways you fill the time with things that can end up being on your CV in the long run.

Do Not Take It For Granted

Trust me, fifth year will be the hardest year of school, so please whatever you do, even if it is nothing, do it well and don’t take it for granted. It’s a fast school year when you’re enjoying it, so make sure to enjoy every second.

Sign up for everything and anything

You may think that you’re taking on way too much but you’ll end up having more time then you know what to do with and then it’ll be too late to sign up for stuff. Schools will always have clubs and classes on that may not seem so appealing when you have your normal classes, but take them and try them. If won’t know if you like it until you give it a try.

Take advantage of the flexibility of the year

This is the one and only year where there is leeway given for outside activities. If you find somewhere that you can volunteer with or work for some mornings, TAKE IT. Schools are happy to give you permission if it benefits you or your future career choices.

Speaking of CV, make one

You have time. Whether it’s at the beginning or end of fourth year, make a CV and fill it with every tiny thing you’ve ever done or achieved. It’ll save time when you are job hunting at some point. It will also only be a case of updating it then.

Choose your work experience early

Don’t be last minute and end up in a ‘watching paint dry’ factory, find something you like to do and look into it. Nearly everywhere take on work experience people because they enjoy the free labour.

P.S we don’t currently have the ability to take on any work experience students in person at Missy HQ due to COVID, but if you have an interest in pursuing a career in writing or social media drop us an email. We are always looking for new voices on missy.ie!

Go to college open days

Yes, I know it’s early but you’ve got the time. Just make it a day, bring a pal, get some lunch, look around a college and get some free goodie bags. It’s a win win.

Transition Year really is what you make it to be. It’s a full year of your life after all, so it’s best to make the most out of it!
