What causes body acne in the first place?

Acne whether it is on your face or on your arm is a result of hair follicles that have become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. These clogged pores become infected and cause whiteheads, black heads and pimples, all depending on how badly clogged the pore is. If it is quite badly clogged it can lead to a cyst, which can be painful.

Fluctuating hormone levels during your teenage years and in to your adult years are usually the main culprit for acne. As well unhealthy life styles, diets high in sugar and dairy, as well as sweaty gym gear and poor hygiene are all factors that lead to acne.

What are the symptoms of body acne?

  • body acne is recognised as an area of the following:

  • cystic pimples (large infected red spots)

Who does body acne effect?

Anyone with skin! If you have skin you can develop acne, to put it simply. Acne is common in teenagers due to fluctuating hormone levels that cause excess oil to be produced, however adult acne is very much a thing! As is males experiencing acne.

How to treat body acne

Depending on what is causing your acne- lifestyle, personal hygiene or changing hormone levels how easy it will be to treat your body acne varies. There are loads of treatment options none the less, so no need to worry!

Start by making a few lifestyle changes if you think that may be the reason for your acne. Take a look at your diet and try cutting down on sugar, junk food and dairy and incorporate more fresh fruits and veggies in to your diet to see if that makes a difference.

Water! Water is your best friend if you want to improve acne. Water flushes out toxins from the body that could be causing your pores to become clogged. It also gives your skin a fresh and healthy appearance. Aim for 2 litres water per day.

Exercise – exercise gets the heart rate up and improves circulation. This helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to the skin, keeping the skin healthy and promoting collagen production.  Just be sure to shower properly after you work out and throw your workout gear in the wash to avoid sweat sitting on your skin for too long, causing your skin to become clogged.
