Everything You Need To Know About The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards

Sorcha Kennedy

Although lots of events have been cancelled this summer, MTV have decided to go ahead with the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards.
The awards will take place on the 30th of August and will be the first event to take place in New York since the beginning of the pandemic. Instead of being held indoors like they usually are, there will several outdoor performances throughout the city with no audience.
In a statement, MTV stated that “In close consultation with state and local health officials‎, it became clear at this time that outdoor performances with limited or no audience would be more feasible and safer than an indoor event. The VMAs will highlight the boroughs in an exciting show and return to Barclays Center in 2021. MTV will continue to work closely with the Department of Health, state and local officials, the medical community, and key stakeholders to ensure the safety of all involved.”

Who’s Preforming?

The show will be hosted by Keke Palmer and will feature performances by Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga, The Weeknd, Doja Cat, BTS, and a few others.
Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga are the two most nominated artists with 9 nominations each, followed closely by The Weeknd and Billie Eilish with 6 nominations. Other nominated artists in include Justin Bieber, The Jonas Brothers, and Lana Del Rey. This years show also includes new categories that include “best music video from home” and “best quarantine performance”. It’s super interesting to see an awards show adapt to these strange times.
You can vote on the MTV website, and you get 10 votes per category. You can vote every day until the show on the 30th of August.
On MTV’s YouTube channel you can also rewatch some of the most iconic VMA performances, such as Ariana’s performance of God Is A Woman at last years awards or Lady Gaga’s performance of Poker Face and Paparazzi in 2009.
Even though the world is so crazy at the moment, it is nice to have these types of things still going ahead to let us escape and just enjoy a good show.
