Five Comfort Rom Coms For The Cold Autumn Nights That Feel Like A Warm Hug

Holly O' Neill

The days are getting shorter, darker and god forbid you leave the house without a coat. Meaning it’s the perfect time for a comfort movie.

What defines a movie as a comfort movie? For me a comfort movie is a movie you could watch over and over again and fall in love with more and more each time. It’s the movie you put on when you’ve had a hard day, you had a fight with your best friend or you just need some TLC. A comfort movie must compare to a snuggly hug or that first sip of hot cocoa.

Here are my tried and tested ultimate comfort movies.

Monte Carlo

Monte Carlo starring Selena Gomez, Leighton Meister and Cory Monteith just to name a few follows three friends to Paris where selena’s character “Grace” accidentally gets mistaken for a british socialite which leads them on a dream- worthy trip to Monte Carlo, where the characters have to quickly and effortlessly adjust to this extraordinary lifestyle of balls, yachts and designer clothes so their secret does not get exposed. This film is a comfort movie because it easily encapsulates the longing of wanting to grow up to become a princess shared by many young girls. Monte Carlo will allow you to escape the cold of Ireland and witness the enchantment of the gleaming sun in Paris and Monte Carlo. It’s a movie that will never not make me believe in faith, true love and even a little bit of magic!

Father of The Bride

Father of the bride, a laugh out loud comedy which will make you spill your cup of tea out of laughter. Made in 1991 it shares the story of the “Banks” family, who suddenly get submerged into the world of all things weddings, when the eldest daughter “Annie” shares the unexpected news that she is engaged. Steve Martin smashingly plays the role of the utterly muddled father when it comes to weddings ( the exact way most Irish fathers would be in these circumstances). Father of the bride is most definitely on my comfort movie list, as it brings up a wholesome yet familiar feeling within me and I can confidently say I will most definitely be watching this movie the night before my wedding.

John Tucker Must Die

John Tucker Must Die was the first real grown up romcom I ever watched and it has held a special place in my heart ever since. If you’ve ever been heartbroken by a situationship (afterall it is cuffing season), then this movie will 100% check all the comfort movie boxes for you! This movie shows exactly how to get revenge on a womanising male, when the three secret girlfriends of “John Tucker” find out about each other, they team up and create a plan to make him fall in love with the new girl in school and break

John’s heart when he finds out that this was all a ruse and his feelings aren’t reciprocated but what happens when all starts to become fair in love and war?

Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump is more on the comedic side of the romantic comedy scale but still includes a heartwarming and heartbreaking love story, perfect to warm up your heart on those cold autumn evenings. The movie sees simple minded “Forrest” played by Tom Hanks narrate the story of his life from childhood into adulthood, in which you also follow his best friend “Jenny” and see that he lived through multiple historical events. This movie is a fan favourite, which has led to the opening of the american chain “Bubba Gump Shrimp” restaurants that are inspired by the movie and has a lot of quotable lines including the most famous ones “life is like a box of chocolates” & “run Forrest run” . Forrest Gump is the perfect comfort movie as it brings whimsical messages of hope and love, saying this I would recommend having a box of tissues nearby and also maybe some chocolate 🙂

Tangled

What kind of comfort movie list would this be if it didn’t include a good old Disney movie? We can all agree that there is nothing better than curling up into bed on the cold nights and watching the Disney castle appear on your screen! Tangled is the ultimate comfort movie… It includes catchy songs, beautiful animation work and of course Flynn Rider (6 year old Holly was convinced she was going to marry him). Based on the old german fairytale known as “Rapunzel”, we follow the protagonist of the same name on a journey of a lifetime with a runaway thief, when she escapes her tower on a mission to seek her dream of seeing the magical lanterns released on her birthday in real life. Rapunzel is without a doubt my favourite Disney princess and Tangled brings out my inner child every single watch and if i was to tell you “I See The Light” is my most played song on spotify…. Please dont judge me until you watch the movie.

What defines a comfort movie for you? And what movies would be on your list?
