Here’s Why Podcasts Need To Be Appreciated More

Holly O' Neill

One of my friends recently said to me “God, everyone seems to have a podcast these days”. And it made me think about how podcasts need to be admired more.

Podcasts are on the rise; there are over 6 million podcast titles currently available on Spotify. Personally, I very rarely start my day without the voices of podcast hosts from Alex Cooper with” Call Her Daddy” to Doireann Garrihy’s “The Laughs Of Your Life” to Georgie Crawford’s “The Good Glow”.

Here are some reasons as to why podcasts are so popular….

There’s A Podcast For Every Topic

Podcasts have become extremely universal. I started my podcast journey listening to pop culture podcasts just before Covid. I would listen to them as I made notes for my Leaving Cert. Even since 2020, podcasts have grown more and more popular. Now in 2024, there is a wide range of podcasts on many different, niche topics, you name it I guarantee there is a podcast for it. Sport, celebrity gossip, interviews, latest breaking news, crime, health, education, business and thousands of more.

Podcasts can be your best friend

The thing that I love most about podcasts is that they can make you feel less lonely. Sometimes when you are experiencing a day that you feel lonesome, it can be refreshing to hear some other voices than just your own. During Covid both my parents worked on the frontline and I often went from one half of the day to the next without seeing or talking to anyone. In the second lockdown I spent a lot of time listening to podcasts on my speaker as the loud voice made me feel less isolated and like there was someone else at home with me. Especially after listening to a podcast for a large amount of time, you start to really get to know the podcast hosts and it starts to feel like you know them personally. At this point I would consider myself best friends with Joanne and Vogue from all the “My Therapist Ghosted Me” episodes that I’ve listened to.

Podcasts Are Our Generations Radio

As much as radio is still such an essential part of the media we consume daily, podcasts have started to become our generation’s radio. Radio was invented in the 1890s, it was such a huge creation at the time and really set the record for the creation of other media platforms. Podcasts came about in 2004, but only really took off in the late 2010s. Nowadays podcasts have become the modern equivalent of radio and teenagers would be turning on podcasts a lot more than they would be the radio.

Podcasts Are Very Casual And Easily Accessible

Podcasts are extremely simple to find and listen to, titles can be found online or on streaming apps, the most popular ones would be Spotify and Apple Music. Podcasts are available on demand, 24 hours a day. Unlike radio you are able to listen back to the podcast and resume listening whenever it works for you. I often find myself re-listening to some of my favorite podcast episodes instead of starting new ones… You can listen to podcasts all over the world, you can check the podcast charts and listen to podcasts recorded anywhere from Ireland to Mexico.

I love downloading podcasts for flights as they tend to help make the time go by faster. My whole flight home from visiting my family in Los Angeles during the summer I listened to “Dinner’s on Me” created by Modern Family’s, Jesse Tyler Furgeson which entails him interviewing fellow celebrities about their careers, whilst they try various restaurants around Los Angeles. If you haven’t listened to this one already go grab your earphones and turn it on… your in for a treat.
