Important Questions to Ask Yourself as a Teen

Team Missy

Being a teenager can feel like a whirlwind. One minute, you’re stressing over school; the next, you’re wondering about your future, friendships, and who you even are. It’s a lot! But taking time to reflect and ask yourself the right questions can help you feel more in control of your life. Think of it like being your own big sister—checking in on yourself to make sure you’re on the right path.

Here are some important questions to ask yourself as a teen:

1. Am I Being True to Myself?

It’s easy to get caught up in what everyone else is doing or what you think you should be like. But at the end of the day, you need to ask yourself—am I making choices that feel right for me? Whether it’s how you dress, the hobbies you have, or the way you act around people, make sure you’re not just trying to fit in.

2. Do My Friendships Make Me Feel Good?

Friendships should add to your life, not drain you. Ask yourself if your friends support and uplift you, or if they make you feel bad about yourself. Real friends won’t pressure you into things that make you uncomfortable or make you feel like you have to change to fit in.

3. Am I Taking Care of Myself?

Self-care isn’t just face masks and bubble baths (although they help!). It’s about looking after your mental and physical health. Am I getting enough sleep? Eating properly? Taking breaks when I feel overwhelmed? Checking in on yourself like this can help prevent burnout and stress.

4. What Do I Want for My Future?

You don’t need to have your whole life figured out, but it’s good to think about what you actually want. Do you enjoy the subjects you’re studying? What kind of career excites you? What hobbies do you love? Asking these questions early can help you make decisions that will benefit your future self.

5. Am I Spending My Time Wisely?

It’s easy to fall into a cycle of scrolling on your phone for hours (we’ve all been there), but is the way you spend your time actually making you happy? Think about whether your time is going towards things that make you feel good and bring you joy, rather than just passing time.

6. Do I Speak Kindly to Myself?

The way you talk to yourself matters. If you’re constantly putting yourself down, it’s time to change that. Would you speak to a friend the way you speak to yourself? Be your own biggest cheerleader!

7. What Do I Stand For?

What matters most to you? Whether it’s kindness, honesty, equality, or standing up for what you believe in, knowing your values helps guide you in life. Don’t be afraid to stand by them, even if others don’t always agree.

8. Who Can I Talk To If I’m Struggling?

Everyone has tough times, and it’s important to know who you can turn to when you need support. Whether it’s a family member, a friend, a teacher, or a counsellor, having someone to talk to makes a huge difference. You don’t have to go through things alone.

9. Am I Having Fun?

Life isn’t just about school, exams, and responsibilities. It’s meant to be enjoyed! Are you making time for things that make you happy? Whether it’s a hobby, hanging out with friends, or just watching your favourite show, fun is just as important as everything else.

10. What Would My Future Self Thank Me For?

Think about the version of you in five or ten years. What decisions would they be glad you made? Maybe it’s setting boundaries, studying for that exam, or choosing to be kinder to yourself. Small choices now can have a big impact later.

Taking time to reflect on these questions every now and then can help you feel more confident in yourself and your decisions. Remember, you’re growing and figuring things out—that’s completely normal. Just keep checking in with yourself and making choices that feel right for you.
