Our Top 5 Favourite Things About Going Back to School

Neasa Murphy

Is it Back to School time already?
What a weird year it’s been so far! School this year is going to be a bit different, but thankfully, there are certain things about Back to School that we can always depend on to stay the same.
As always, the end of the summer holidays is bittersweet. On the one hand, it’s the end of late-night Netflix and pizza, and on the other, it’s a return to a bit of routine, which let’s be honest, we all need more of this year.
With that said, here are our top 5 favourite things about going Back to School.

1. The smell of new books

Alright so schoolbooks are heavy, and sometimes full of stuff we honestly couldn’t be bothered learning (we know it’s useful, that’s not the point), but who doesn’t love the smell of new books? That clean, papery smell is just how you feel at the beginning of a new school year- fresh, academic, and full of good intentions…however long they may last…

2. Blank stationary

Oh, how we love a good notebook! We all know pens are for scribbling and pages are for writing on, but empty pages and lines waiting to be filled are just so satisfying to look at. Just flicking through the brand-new pages and deciding which notebook will be for what purpose makes you feel like a YouTuber doing a “Get Organised With Me”. It’s the little things that make life sweet.

3. New timetables

Will we have Maths first thing on Monday? Who’s teaching Irish this year? Did we FINALLY get P.E. last thing on Friday? A timetable is a simple thing really, but getting a new one gives you that sense of new beginnings and variety that all we need from time to time. We all like having a purpose, a place to be and a time to be there, and that’s exactly what your timetable gives you- literally.

4. Fresh gossip

A lot can change in a summer. Whether it’s a new student arriving in the class, or a change of staff at school, a bit of fresh gossip will always be had at the beginning of the year. Did anyone get their driving license over the summer? What did everyone watch on Netflix? Were there summer romances? Who’s going to be on the sports teams this year? New year, new conversation. Exactly what we need right now.

5. Catching up with friends

We saved the best one for last. This year, more than ever, the best part of Back to School will definitely be the social part. It’s been a weird summer, and although school will be a little weird at first too, a good September catch up has never been more needed. Plus, it’s been even longer since everyone was together this year, as everything closed so suddenly in March.
So, get your mask on, get your new books in your bag, and enjoy being around each other again, because it’s been way too long!
