Small Irish Businesses You Need to Know About

Veronica Murphy

Although Ireland may be a small country, one thing we definitely do not lack is creativity! As a country, we are teeming with so many wonderful small Irish businesses. In an age where the powerful companies are only getting more powerful, we really should be making a conscious effort to support local and small businesses more and more.

We have created a list of just some of the amazing small Irish businesses that we love here at Missy and want to bring more awareness to. From clothing to beauty, gifts, to candles, we got you covered.

Howard Studios

Created by twin sisters Ciara and Rachel Howard, Howrad Studios came to fruition during lockdown. Ever since they have grown and grown, now standing at an impressive 32 thousand followers on Instagram.

The pair are known for creating funky design prints as well as their take on iconic pop-culture moments, printing everything from mugs to keychains, and stickers. Whether it be a motivational quote, a Harry Styles mug (a personal fave), or a T-Swift keyring, Howrad has something for everyone. Their ability to create fresh and trending products means the girls have had success all over the world, never mind just Ireland. They only recently celebrated their 3rd birthday, but we can’t wait to see just how far their business goes.

The Smooth Company

I wonder when Áine Kennedy had the idea to create the smooth stick, did she realise the impact it would have on all our lives? If you don’t know what I am referring to, it’s time to get familiar with the Smooth Stick. It is basically a mascara wand with a product to tame those pesky flyaways. Say goodbye to frizz and elevate your slick back bun time and time again. We’re not the only ones who have been loving it recently. Áine has seen a string of famous faces using her products including Milly Bobby Brown, Holly Willoughby, and Maya Jama! A true game-changer. We love.

We caught up with Áine recently to talk to her about starting her own business, you can read that article here.

Debúrca Design

Another company which is embracing the Irish language is DeBúrca Designs, run by Orlaith DeBúrca. Many of their designs are printed in Irish, but they also have some English designs too. DeBúrca stocks everything from hoodies, t-shirts, tote bags and even stickers.

They have been having great success so far, with their Grá Mór tote bag receiving a lot of love online. Their apparel and totes are all screen printed with sustainable inks in Dublin, they use recycled paper where possible and their packaging is 100% recyclable or compostable. You love to see it!

Mara Duit

Owned by Póilín Nic Géidigh, Mara Duit is an Irish print and greeting card business that celebrates the Irish language as well as having some pretty dang cute designs. It’s always refreshing to have options as gaelige, and it is important to support these small Irish businesses and invest in our culture as well as our people. They stock a range of products from calendars, prints, day planners, and even notebooks. They are available to purchase online as well as from various stockists such as Batch in Falcarragh, and PotaCafe in Galway. Chomh galánta!

Gealach Candles

These handmade crystal infused candles are a must for any candle-lovers. Run by Chloe in county Clare, Gealach make the most beautiful candles and wax melts from soy wax which are hand poured, scented with pure essential oils and decorated using crystals and dried botanicals, and maybe even some glitter! It’s obvious that each candle is made with intention and each one is unique. Not only will they smell to-die-for, but they will be a gorgeous addition to your room.

Monthlies Organics

Periods can be difficult at best. It can be a tough time of the month for many, and there can be an overload of information on what we should and shouldn’t be using. Monthlies Organics was founded by Jessie Bennett with an aim to eliminate the stigma and provide safe and accessible period products for all. Their products are plastic-free, toxin-free, sustainable, AND vegan & cruelty-free. Their period products are made from 100% organic cotton as well as being wrapped in recyclable and biodegradable materials.

With Monthlies, they allow you to take control with the ‘Own Your Flow’ feature on their website where you are able to create your own period box that suits your needs. This can be pads, tampons, or a mix of both. You can select exactly how many you will need and have the option to choose from regular and super absorbency. Allowing you to pick and choose exactly what you need means less waste and is overall better for the environment. They also have a ton of helpful and educational information on their social channels, so make sure to check them out.

Oh, and did we mention the packaging is super cute? 10/10
