5 Feminist Books To Empower And Inspire

So, now that we are on our way to having body autonomy in Ireland the fire has been lit. There is so much to know and learn about the feminist movement across the world and as everyone knows the best way to learn and broaden the mind is through reading.

Here are 5 books to inspire and to give you more knowledge.

A Girl’s Guide To Joining The Resistance – A Feminist Handbook on Fighting For Good by Emma Gray

Emma Gray wrote this book to be a guide for self-care and activism in Trump’s America. This provides background information on key issues so you can be informed and decide where you stand on certain issues. There’s a guide for navigating the world of “fake news” and making sure you’re getting quality information. Theres also helpful and practical advice on how you can get involved with organisations that help and support. We love how approachable each topic is and how the book is laid out with colourful illustrations.

Feminist Books For Teens

Scribble Yourself Feminist by Chidera Eggerue

Scribble Yourself Feminist is such a fun book. It’s full of quizzes and pages to colour in, lots of inspirational quotes and stories; plus it really gets you thinking about what your thoughts and opinions are on feminist and genre issues in a non-intimidating way. We wish we could show you every single page in this book because it’s just so beautiful. If you’re looking to broaden your mind, this is the one for you to start with!

Feminists Don’t Wear Pink (and other lies): Amazing women on what the F-word means to them

“I didn’t know I was a feminist until I was fifteen. I didn’t know I was a feminist because I didn’t know I needed to be, and I also didn’t think I would still be allowed to wear make-up if I became one”. – Scarlett Curtis.

We mentioned this one before and we’re so excited that it has finally been released. The book is a collection of personal essays from various writers on diverse topics. The book was curated by Scarlett Curtis, who is our absolute hero here at Scarlett is a passionate activist and co-founder of The Pink Protest. This is a brilliant book full of great advice and inspiration. Contributors to the book include Evanna Lynch, Jameela Jamil, Keira Knightley, Tanya Burr, Kat Dennings, Saoirse Ronan and Zoella to name but a few.

Royalties of each copy sold will go to Girl Up, an initiative hosted by the United Nations Foundation.

That’s What She Said – Wise Word From Influential Women by Timothy Joy

This is the perfect pick-me-up and a book to really inspire. Each double page has beautiful illustration and quote from an inspiring women in history and a short biography of each women on the other page. With beauty words of wisdom from Iris Apfel, to Oprah, Michelle Obama and Emily Dickenson to name but a few. This is such a beautiful book and something you’ll have for years. The temptation to cut all the portraits is real, but we just couldn’t do that to a book!

Together We Rise – The Women’s March Behind The Scenes At The Protest Heard Around The World -The Women’s March Organisers and Conde Nast

On January 21, 2017, three million people boarded buses, Sharpie’d signs, and took to the streets as part of the largest protest in American history. Marchers from eighty-two countries and all seven continents rose in solidarity to share a common message: Hear our voice. This is the definitive history of the Women’s March, a front-row seat to the genesis, planning, and execution of one of history’s most galvanizing movements, and a look at how women are moving forward.

This is a beautiful coffee table style book that’s perfect to dip in and out of and something history lovers will adore.

5 Things Mrs Hinch Has Taught Us

We never thought we would be discussing the topic of cleaning on, but stay with us on this…

At the beginning of the week we learned of a phenomenon sweeping Instagram – Mrs Hinch and her cleaning tips! You’re probably thinking really? Cleaning? But trust us, Mrs Hinch’s Instagram is addictive! We’ve watched all of her highlights, liked most of her posts (not to sound creepy…) and we are now fully fledged Mrs Hinch-lings!

So, if you’ve recently moved out for college, or just want to impress the parentals, here are the top 5 things Mrs Hinch has taught us about cleaning!

1) Washing Your Washing Machine Is A Thing…

Eh, this one took us at Missy HQ by storm. So much so that we now have a dedicated group chat to the topic. You should wash your washing machine. No one told us that! Needless to say some serious washing machine cleaning is going down this weekend. (We. Are. Wild). Mrs Hinch recommends cleaning the drawer where all your washing powder etc. goes. As well as giving the rubber part of the barrel a good scrub. You’d be surprised how dirty these bits can get…!

2) Vinegar Is Not Just For Chips!

Vinegar may make your takeaway taste that bit better but did you know it also works wonders on cleaning glass and mirrors? You may be thinking how is that relevant, but we’re sure you have a mirror or two in your bedroom that could do with a good clean! Mrs Hinch recommends Stardrops Vinegar Spray, so naturally we’re now fully stocked up!

3) Not All Cloths Were Created Equal…

We’ve not lost the plot, bear with us! Mrs Hinch uses cloths by the brand Minky. However, we’ve lovingly taken on her pronunciation of “MINKEH!” (If we were Minky Homecare we’d be rebranding ASAP). We never thought we’d be obsessed with a cloth or sponge but here we are…

5 Things Mrs Hinch Has Taught Us

4) Zoflora Is Life

Before this week we just thought of Zoflora as a disinfectant, but after watching Mrs Hinch – it’s now a way of life. Zoflora is a natural product, so it’s not only a great cleaner, it’s good for the environment! Win/Win! It also smells amazing. Be sure to dilute it down though or the smell might be a tad bit overwhelming! Use it on floors, toilets, anything!

5) Clockwise Cleaning

Mrs Hinch keeps all of her cleaning products in baskets, separated by product type or use (Monica Geller, is that you?). For the clockwise clean, she takes her “daily basket”, filled with bits she’ll need for whatever cleaning goes on that day, and her wipes basket. (Invest in some wipes if you want to get your floors sparkling, a mop is not enough apparently! We were shocked too!). For the clockwise clean you start on the left of whatever room you are tackling, and work your way round in a clockwise direction! Genius! Eat your heart out Snow White!

5 Things Mrs Hinch Has Taught Us

Are you as blown away by these tips as we are? Have you any cleaning tips of your own you’d like to share?

5 Books To Read If You Loved To All The Boys I Loved Before

5 Books To Read If You Loved To All The Boys I Loved Before

Our obsession with To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before is real! We’ve already watched some movies to try feed our obsession,so now it’s time to turn to our other obsession…books!

The movie was based on the mega-popular book series, so that got us thinking about other books that have similar themes and stories as To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before.

Here are 5 books to read if you loved To All The Boys I Loved Before

P.S. I Still Love You, and Always and Forever, Lara Jean

Need more of Lara Jean and Peter? We feel you! It’s a good job that there are two more books in the series. There’s major talk that both books will also be made into movies after the huge success of TATBILB, so get on that ASAP to find out what happens. Spoiler Alert: John Ambrose is a main character in both books!😱

Eleanor & Park

The story follows dual narratives by Eleanor and Park, two misfits living in Omaha, Nebraska from 1986 to 1987. Eleanor and Park meet on a school bus on Eleanor’s first day at the school and they gradually connect through comic books and mix tapes of ’80s music, sparking a love story. This book has been topping best-selling YA novel lists for a few years now, so there’s a lot of love for it.

Anna and the French Kiss

Anna can’t wait for her senior year in Atlanta, where she has a good job, a loyal best friend, and a crush on the verge of becoming more. So, she’s not too thrilled when her father unexpectedly ships her off to boarding school in Paris – until she meets Etienne St. Clair, the perfect boy! The only problem? He’s taken, and Anna might be, too, if anything comes of her crush back home. Will a year of romantic near-misses end in the French kiss Anna awaits? This deals with a similar theme as TATBILB in that Anna and Laura Jean both have the habit of holding onto the idea of someone else instead of living their lives in the now.

The Fault In Our Stars

The story is narrated by Hazel Grace Lancaster, a 16-year-old girl with cancer. Hazel’s parents force her to attend a teen cancer support group where she subsequently meets and falls in love with 17-year-old Augustus Waters, an ex-basketball player and amputee – who may just rival our love for Peter G! There’s also a movie version to watch, which will leave you with a stupid smile on your face, just like To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before…until it all becomes very real. Get ready for your heart to break. Also, the cover for this is giving our serious vibes for the ICONIC Laura Jean and Pater screen saver!

If I Stay

The story follows 17-year-old Mia Hall as she deals with the aftermath of a catastrophic car accident involving her family. Mia is the only member of her family to survive, and she finds herself in a coma. Through this coma Mia has an out-of-body experience where she is able to watch her friends and family gather at the hospital where she is being treated. Mia finds herself stuck between two worlds; the world of the living, and the world of those who have moved on. Mia realizes that she must use her past and her relationships to make a decision for her future. What will her life be like if she stays?

5 Questions That Will Change Your Life

5 Questions That Will Change Your Life

If you think a Insta Model body or a BF is your one-way ticket to internal happiness, it’s time to get some serious perspective. Answer these questions honestly and they might just change your life!

1. Will Being Thin Really Make Me Happy?

If you’re frantically nodding your head right now, you could be in trouble. It’s easy to think your life would be perfect if only you were taller/shorter, blonder, more tan…but the reality is that looking “good” is no guarantee that you’ll feel confident. Spoiler: “beautiful” people have problems too.

Happiness comes from within and beauty really is only skin deep. Think about it. Do you seriously think that celebrities and Insta Models don’t have problems? Just one look at their Twitter mentions will prove that it’s not all plain sailing for them either. You wouldn’t think it to look at her, but Lily Reinhart has admitted that she suffers a lot from anxiety, depression and is very insecure about her skin. You never know what is going on inside someone else’s head, no matter what they may look like on the outside.

Is theres’ something about your body that you’d like to change, ask yourself “why“? Everyone has bits that they don’t like, but instead of stressing about them why not draw up a list of things that you do like about yourself and probably take for granted? Read over it whenever you feel down. And don’t forget that real girls aren’t perfect and perfect girls aren’t real. You’re unique and that’s what makes you pretty damn special.

2. Is Having A Boyfriend Really Important?

When you’re single, it can feel like everyone in the world is coupled-up (seriously, what is it with all these super quick celeb engagements?) while you’re left as the Bridget Jones of your gang. But if you think that you need to be in a relationship to be truly happy, you could be suffering from low self-esteem, especially if you’re willing to date some randomer who you’re not that into.

When you’re single you can spend as much time with your friends as you like, get to keep every weekend open for spontaneous adventures and you can say you’re an Independent Woman. When you really think about it, are you really desperate to lose all of those things? It’s normal to want to be in a secure and loving relationship, but being one of those girls who simply can’t fly solo means you’ll never feel whole unless you’re someone else’s other half. And that’s just not healthy, or much fun. When you find someone who you are truly meant to be with, you’ll know. But there’s no point in forcing a relationship just for the sake of it. And it’s an even worse idea to think that having a boyfriend will solve all of your problems, it might just create them.

Now, all the single ladies, put your hands up!

3. Am I A Good Friend?

Who do you rely on? Think about them right now and ask yourself can they say the same about you? Are you guilty of not being there for your friends when they need you, even-though they provide a first-rate counselling service to you? If you’re the type of person who drops friends like hot potatoes once someone else comes along, you really need to start evaluating how you treat people. Everyone needs friends and as you go through life you’ll find that you rely more and more on a core group of friends. But friendship is a two-way street and they need the effort. And in order to be deserving of good friends, you need to be a great friend in return.

If you’ve just realised that you haven’t been the best friends lately there’s no need to get down about it. Instead, get everyone around foe Netflix and chill night and make sure that they know how much they all mean to you.

4. Am I A Nightmare To Live With?

You probably don’t give your home life a second thought, but maybe it’s time that you do. When you’re a child, your parents are obliged to care for you and they don’t really expect any thanks for it, but now that you’re well on your way to adulthood it’s time to re-evaluate your living situation. Does your mum still make all your meals? Does she still wash your clothes and change your sheets too? Instead of talking all that hotel-style help for granted, why not give back every once in a while?

It could be something as simple as offering to vacuum the living room or washing up after the Sunday lunch, neither of which will take yo too much time or effort.

Think about how your parents and siblings view you. We all get a bit short-tempered at time, but if you’re constantly starting arguments and throwing diva fits over the slightest thing, it might be time to re-evaluate your attitude. Make an effort to be kinder and more patient with your ‘rents. Ever get scolded for having “a tone“? Maybe try improve on that. Because even if your family drives you spare at times, they still love you endlessly and are only trying to do their best. So, check the attitude at the front door and help out a bit more. Say thank you to your parents and appreciate them a bit more.

5. Am I Reaching My Full Potential?

Think of how frustrating it must be for your teachers and parents if they see you coast along without really, whole-heartedly trying. It’s not that they’re “always on your case”. They care about you and want to see you do well and reach your full-potential.

If you ever scraped a C after not studying for a test, imagine what you cod achieve with a bit more effort?

Instead of shrugging it off, the next time someone tells you to believe you can do something, LISTEN UP for a change. Whether it’s in school, sport or with your family and friends – you have the potential to be the best, if only you’d trust yourself. Don’t let that voice inside you that tells you that you can’t do something. Or that you’re too tired. Or you’ve done the bare minimum – it’s grand, take over. Aim for the stars – and the sky’s the limit.

5 Spot Treatments That Actually Work

5 Spot Treatments That Actually Work

Why is it that spots just seem to appear from nowhere right before a big event? It is the story of our life. And being self-conscious about spots is an awful feeling.

So, we thought we would take a look at some of the best spot treatments that actually work.

From budget buys that are widely available, to Kylie Jenner’s fav spot treatment, to some impressive new technology. We have all the info that you need to help sort your skin out once and for all. And how to deal with a last-minute spot emergency.

Mario Badescu Drying Lotion

Kylie Jenner swears by this spot treatment and so does Lili Reinhart, so it must be good! This Drying Lotion is a blend of Calamine and Salicylic Acid, which clears up and soothes unsightly whiteheads overnight without irritating the surrounding skin. You simply dip a cotton bud in the powdery substance at the bottom of the bottle and apply over spots at night-time. If you’ve ever resorted to using Sudocream on spots, it kinda resembles that. This is especially good for those with sensitive skin. This is great for drying spots out, but not the best in a spot emergency. This really does what it says and drys out the spot, but that can mean it’s a bit tougher to hide with concealer. This is the one to use if you’re still a few days away from an event when a spot erupts.

Clean & Clear Advantage Spot Treatment Gel

Sometimes it’s easy to become cynical of the humble spot treatments on offer in a chemist BUT this Clean & Clear Spot Treatment Gel is wonderful at taking the redness out of those spots that just won’t seem to come to a head. It’s said that this can start to clear spots in only 4 hours, meaning it’s great when you need to get rid of a spot ASAP. This probably isn’t the recommended advice, but when it’s an emergency…apply this a few times a day if you need to get a giant spot down as quickly as possible. Definitely the one to have on standby in the run up to the Debs!

Witch Naturally Clear Blemish Stick

Another great drug store treatment for spots is the Witch Naturally Clear Blemish Stick. This helps to break-down excess oils and fights the bacteria that cause spots. It’s also oil free. You can feel this working almost instantly as there’s a slight tingling sensation. This is particularly good for bringing down those angry, red spots. This is also handy for popping into your bag while you’re on the go and for applying over makeup when you feel like the spot might be getting bigger.

The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution

One of the most prominent ingredients in spot treatments is Salicylic Acid. What is Salicylic Acid? Well, it has anti-inflammatory properties, so helps to tone down redness and inflammation of acne. So, why not just use Salicylic Acid on its own?  The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution exfoliates the surface of skin, clearing away dead skin cells, and penetrates into the inside walls of pores to clear excess oils that can lead to clogging. It also helps to reduce the appearance of blemishes and clarifies the skin.  It can even help to regulate sebum production so skin becomes more balanced over time. Sounds like the business, right? Well it’s only €5.30! Not only can it be used as a spot treatment, you can also use it as a more general treatment to exfoliate and clear pores to help prevent spots in the first place.

Neutrogena Visibly Clear Light Therapy Targeted Acne Spot Treatment

A new spot treatment on offer is the Neutrogena Visibly Clear Light Therapy Targeted Acne Spot Treatment. Light Therapy is similar to what dermatologists use to treat acne. The blue light targets acne causing bacteria while the red light penetrates deeper to reduce inflammation. You simply use the pen-like light on a spot to help reduce the inflammation. There’s a built-in timer that switches off once the 2 minutes are up. This is probably best when you feel like there might be a spot starting to come up, but if you’re looking to get rid of spots we’d recommend one of the above spot treatments.

If you are suffering from persistent spots or cystic-acne you may need something stronger prescribed from your G.P. If it’s concerning you go get it checked out. Also, sometimes your skin can become a bit immune to spot treatments after a certain while. If you feel like something has suddenly stopped working for you try mix it up with another product for a while.

What spot treatments do you swear by? Let us know in the comments below!

5 00s Teen Movies You Would’ve Been Obsessed With

5 00s Teen Movies You Would've Been Obsessed With

5 00s Teen Movies You Would've Been Obsessed With

There’s no doubt that there are lots of movies and TV shows on offer from streaming services, but sometimes you just need a bit of inspo. We’ve already delved into some of the best Old school TV Shows for your viewing pleasure, so now it’s time to turn our attentions to some old school teen movies.

00’s teen movies were the best and frankly they just don’t make ’em like they used to. If you had been a teenager growing up in the ’00s, these movies would have been your fav!

Get the popcorn ready and prepare to laugh, cry and be baffled by the fact it was ok for a teen to hook-up with her coach…

A Walk To Remember

A Walk To Remember is based on the book by the same author of The Notebook, The Last Song, Dear John and a ton of other films. The movie follows the typical formula of a bad boy falling for the outcast girl, but there is a huge twist in the story mid-way though. Warning: this will break your heart, so have the tissues ready.

The Lizzie McGuire Movie

Honestly, it was hard to pick just one Hilary Duff movie to include on our list because Hilary dominated 00s teen movies. A Cinderella Story came in so close, but for us The Lizzie McGuire movie is our top pick. Although it did give us unreasonable expectations about what our Transition Year Trip would be like. Spoiler: you will not discover your own famous pop star doppelgänger and perform at huge concert. Sorry. But this is what dreams are made of!

Save The Last Dance

If there was one thing that 00s teen movies did well, it was dance movies. And because this was the first in a long line of dance related movies (we’re looking you, Step Up) it’s probably the best. Sara, a ballet dancer, moves from a small town to the south side of Chicago when her mother dies in a car accident were she struggles to adjust to her new life. Then she meets Derek. Together they blend their love of ballet and hip hop as they both learn to move on from their troubled pasts.

Bend It Like Beckham

18-year-old Jess loves playing football, but her parents have forbidden her to play because she is a girl. After meeting Jules she joins a local women’s team, but she finds it near impossible to juggle her passion and her families expectations. Bend It Like Beckham is more than just a movie about football. It’s about bending the rules on family expectations and gender norms and having strong, supportive friendships to see you through. Out of all the 00s teen movies, this one is probably the most inspiring.

13 Going On 30

Ever feel like you’re over being a teen and wish that you could just fast-forward to your awesome adult life? Well, be careful what you wish for is all we’re saying. When Jenna makes a wish at her 13th Birthday Party she is shocked to wake up the next morning as a 30-year-old magazine editor in New York. THB we would be shook too. A lot of hilarity ensues. The soundtrack is also awesome!

What other 00s teen movies do you love? Let us know in the comments below.

5 Things To Do This Weekend

We’ve got that Friday feeling!

Here are 5 things to do this weekend…

1. Register For Darkness Into Light

Darkness Into Light is Pieta House’s flagship annual fundraising and awareness event to promote suicide prevention and to tackle the stigma assisted with mental health. The 5km walk takes place at 4.15am on May 12th. Most walkers will finish the walk just as the sun comes up to show the significance in the saying, the night is always darkest before the dawn.

The spirit of Darkness Into Light is so important. And its a wonderful event to be part of. Both Dani and Jessie have already signed up to it, so team Missy will be represented at it. It’s taking place in most towns and cities in Ireland. There are also a few locations worldwide.

You can register for Darkness InTo Light here. There are also venues locally where you can sign up in person. So check social media to see where they are.

This has been a huge event for the past few years and we think its going to be an even bigger deal this year. Make sure that you sign up, not only to help a very worthy cause, but to also ensure that you don’t have FOMO when you wake up to see all the posts on social media on the 12th of May!

For more information about Pieta House’s service visit the Pieta House website.

2. Read

The weekends were made for reading. And if you’re not swamped with exam prep we recommend taking the time to get a whole lotta reading done. We have built up quite the selection of books for you to choose from. Searching for a new YA series? Or looking for something a bit more historical?

3. Re-watch 13 Reasons Why

We’ve said this on our Twitter, but our spidey senses are tingling at Missy HQ and we think that 13 Reasons Why Season 2 might just do a Beyonce and appear announced on Netflix in the coming weeks.

The evidence? Well there’s not much, which is why we’re suspicious. There’s been no trailer released, which is very weird. Normally a trailer would be out a few months before a release to build up some hype. 13 Reasons wrapped filming late last year, so we know its finished. There was also an advanced screening held a few weeks ago in LA for some very lucky superfans who were made sign an NDA (That’s Non Disclosure Agreement). Spanish Netflix has also dropped a teaser trailer that features none of the cast but instead students discussing issues facing teens. And some of the cast have started saying some words about the new series.

So yeah, we’re calling it; 13 Reasons Why Season 2 is coming soon!

If not in the next few weeks we reckon it will drop just as the summer holidays start to ensure maximum impact. Anyway, you should definitely re-watch the first series because we don’t know about you, but we forgot LOTS of things that happened! OMG Alex!!!!!

Feeling like you need a little pick me up with all this talk of exams looming? We have the perfect way to cheer yourself up. Introducing Salted Pecan Crack Toffee from The Londoner.

This only require 5 ingredients and we bet you have most of them in your kitchen cupboards. But this recipe comes with a warning from The Londoner herself, it’s highly addictive. Hence the “crack” name!

5. Do Some Self-Care

With exams looming left, right and centre it’s easy to forget to look after yourself. Take some time this weekend to do something for your mental health. Whether it be a walk in the countryside or a long, hot bath or reading a magazine from cover to cover; do what makes you feel like a million dollars.

5 Podcasts To Listen To Right Now

It feels like everyone and their mother is jumping on the Podcast bandwagon. But we are here for it. We just love having a good podcast to listen to. They’re great to have on on the background  while you’re doing your “bits and pieces”. And they’re even better as a distraction on public transport. Podcasts are also a great way to get an anxious mind to relax. Because you have to focus on what’s being said it’s a great way to distract yourself. They’re also FREE!

It was only after we put this list together that we realised that it was an all female lineup. Now we’re all for equality, but it’s great to see so many women killing it in this genre when sadly we’re very under represented in the mainstream media, such as radio.

We’re also kinda, maybe thinking of putting a Missy podcast together later this year. Let us know what you think.

Anyway, here’s 5 Podcasts To Listen To Right Now…

“At home with…”

You might already know Lily (aka Lily Pebbles) and Anna (The Anna Edit) separately from their Youtube Channels and blogs, but last year the real-life besties joined forces and started their own podcast, At home with… where the girls chat to their subjects about their homes. So basically if you’re a nosey you’ll love this! In the first season Lily and Anna picked some of our favourite people to interview. From our all-time favourite blogger, Kate La Vie, to Giovanna Fletcher to Zoella. It’s an easygoing and relaxing listen.

Girl Boss Radio

Have we reached peek #girlboss? It’s debatable, but the podcast, Girl Boss Radio, is well worth a listen. Sophia Amoruso interviews a whole host of inspiring gals. Our fave interview (so far!) was with Emily Weiss from Into The Gloss/Glossier. The girl is goals!

Twin Perspectives

When we heard that our favourite travel bloggers, Twins That Travel, were venturing into the land of podcasts we may have jumped for joy. Twin Perspectives is a great mix of chats around travel, blogging and mental health. The only downside is that you may be tempted to jump on the next plane out of Dublin Airport.

Keeping It Candid

Keeping It Candid is weekly podcast series discussing current events, pop culture and everything else #millennial. Its basically like listening to two of your friends.

The Fringe Of It

Imagine our excitement when we found out this week that one of our fav bloggers, What Olivia Did, was launching a podcast. Spoiler: we were mega excited. The Fringe Of It only launched this week, but we’re excited to see where it goes. The fab Olivia is joined by fellow blogger Charlotte Jacklin for some relaxed chats. Seriously, there’s something very soothing about Olivia’s voice.

Do you listen to any cool podcasts we should add to our lists?

Five Books By Awesome Irish Female Authors

5 Books By Awesome Irish Authors To Read Right Now

5 Books By Awesome Irish Female Authors To Read Right Now

Seeing as you enjoyed our last book recommendations we thought we’d share some more of our favourites. In the crowed bookshops it’s so great to see lots of Irish authors taking up some well deserved space. And although there are lots of great writers in Ireland, we thought we’d show the love to some of the awesome Irish female authors out there.

Asking For It by Louise O’ Neill

Asking For It haunted us like no other book. And although it’s deeply disturbing, unsettling and enraging  we urge you to give it a read. The novel follows Emma O’Donovan who lives in a small Irish town. When Emma wakes up on the front porch of her house she can’t remember what happened or how she got there. But everyone else does. Photographs taken at the party showing what happened to Emma that night begin to circulate. But sometimes people don’t want to believe what is right in front of them, especially when the truth concerns the town’s hero. Emma isn’t the perfect victim and that’s the problem. As we said, Asking For It is a tough read, but if it doesn’t get you thinking and ready to burn this society to the ground you must have read it wrong.

If you’re in the mood to be shook further by Louise we also recommend her debut novel Only Ever Yours. Although it’s set in dystopian future Only Ever Yours is a scathing commentary on life today and our obsession with how we as women look and are viewed by others. We’re very excited to read her next book, Almost Love, which will be out early next year.

Oh My God What a Complete Aisling The Novel by Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen

We’ve spoken briefly about OMGWACA before, but it definitely merits another mention. What started off as bait of banter between friends on a Facebook group managed to morph into a novel. OMGWACA is definitely more of a light read compared to the above. The character traits are only hilarious. The ingenious thing is that we are all a bit Aisling in Ireland with our notions. Or we all know an Aisling. She is the quintessential country girl in the big smoke. It’s definitely something fun to chat to your friends about.

Forget by Ruth Gilligan

If you’re a Young Adult reader chances are most books you’ve read have been set in America. Forget was a breath of fresh air in that it’s set here in Ireland. It follows Eva who is dealing with the struggle of suddenly losing her father and new boy Zac. Forget is an easy, but enjoyable read. Ruth impressively wrote this as part of her Transition Year project in school. Ruth went on to write two more books, Somewhere In Between and Can You See Me? We were happy to see Ruth return to the literary world this year with a new novel, Nine Folds Make a Paper Swan.

Spare and Found Parts by Sarah Maria Griffin

Spare and Found Parts is set 100 years after “the Turn”, a machine generated epidemic that wiped out most of Ireland. The 10,000 or so survivors live in a computer-free world known as Black Water City. The price paid for surviving “the Turn” is missing arms, legs, eyes – and in Nell’s case, a heart. Like a lot if dystopian works Spare and Found Parts makes some very pointed observations about society today. If you’re looking for something to really spark your imagination this is the one for you.

Like Other Girls by Claire Hennessy

Another heavy read, but this time from Claire Hennessy. Lauren wants to be just like other girls, but her life is rapidly falling apart. Not only is she dealing with her conflicted thoughts on being bisexual, but Lauren finds out she is pregnant. Left feeling like she has nowhere to turn because no one will understand Lauren is sent down a very dark path. Many of the battles Lauren faces take place in her own mind as she desperately searches for a way to get her life back. Like Other Girls really resonates at the moment as it deals with the issues of the the eighth amendment, gender politics and LGBT+ rights. There is a lot to take away from Lauren’s struggle and journey as a reader. Definitely add this to your reading list.

5 Things To Do This Weekend

Hello, Friday. We’ve been waiting all week for you! We are so looking forward to taking this weekend easy and doing something fun and interesting . Here’s 5 things for you to do this weekend…

We already talked about taking up a new hobby in 5 Changes To Make Now. So why not make good on that and spend your weekend doing something new. We’re feeling a bit creative in these parts, Our editor, Dani, has decided to take up embroidery as of this week. Keep an eye on her Instgram to see how that one goes!

Watch Before I Fall on Netflix. It’s based on the book by Lauren Oliver. Before I Fall explores the decisions we make both big and small and how they affect others. Sam wakes up on Cupid’s Day and it’s just like any other day in her life, until it turns out to be her last. Stuck reliving her last day over and over, Sam untangles the mystery around her death.  If you liked 13 Reasons Why you’ll love this.

Read the hilarious Oh My God, What A Complete Aisling by Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen. OMGWACA only came out this week, but you’re going to be seeing it everywhere , so get in there before your friends and read it first. Spawned from the equally hilarious Facebook Group  OMGWACA follows the quintessential country girl, Aisling, and her life in the big smoke. We guarantee you’ll be falling around the place laughing at the very similar traits Aisling has because we all know an Aisling and there’s a bit for her in us all.

You might be sick of work and study, but why not look at putting you’re free time over the weekends to use and learn more about something you’re interested in? There’s tons of courses you can do online. Fancy being a top blogger? Then have a look at The Blogger Course which will teach you everything you need to know to be the next So Sue Me. Or learn how to be a pro at photography or how to do amazing calligraphy. There are so many options and way too little weekend.

We don’t know about you, but we are hooked on the new series of The Great British Bake Off, although it’s just not the same without Mary. Channel your inner Bake Off contestant and try your hand at something new in the kitchen. We’re loving this Banana Loaf with Cinnamon Butter recipe from one of our favourite bloggers Kate La Vie.

Are you doing anything interesting this weekend?

P.S have you signed up to our newsletter? We’re working on getting it together for the October issue and it will be full of extra content and competitions. You can sign up here.

5 Series to Binge-Watch On Netflix Now

What we did before Netflix we don’t know. But we sure are hooked now. There really is nothing like a good Netflix and Chill session. If you’re looking for a new show to get stuck into step this way…

Gossip Girl

Ok, if you have never seen Gossip Girl you need to get on it right now. GG is set in the super wealthy area of NYC known as The Upper East Side and it’s just full of additive scandal. All we can say is OMG the clothes! And the drama! And Chuck Bass! We envy those of you starting this series for the first time. What are you waiting for?

Jane The Virgin

If you’re looking to be pleasantly surprised by a show Jane The Virgin is your ticket. The title is a bit um..random, but this is a laugh out loud show that will keep you saying just one more episode.

One of those shows that had an incredible first series and then was so-so until it was cancelled in its fourth series. This is a loose, and we mean very loose, retelling of Mary Queen of Scots and her arranged marriage at 16 to the heir to the French throne. Don’t expect this to be a boring history lesson though. Again there’s some serious inspiration to be gotten from the clothes. Also, a number of episodes including the very first where shot in Ireland. Ashford Castle was used as the outside of the French castle. So keep an eye out for some Irish scenery as you watch!

The Vampire Diaries

You may be rolling your eyes thinking that vampires are so over, but trust us give TVD a try and we promised you’ll be hooked. Full of so many twists and turns theres 7 whole series of TVD to get through and then there’s also a spinoff series, The Originals to keep you going.

Pretty Little Liars

If you happened to live under a rock for the last few years and you’ve yet to get stuck into PLL you are in for a treat. PPL just wrapped up after 7 series. For a teen show it had an outrageous body count. If you’re looking for something to keep you guessing until the very end give this a go.
