Taylor Swift and Matty Healy’s Relationship Timeline
Well, well, well…when we all all thought that the subject of Taylor Swift’s 11th studio album, ‘THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT‘ would be the breakdown of her relationship with Joe Alwyn, once again blondie surprised us all. Most of the album is about Matty Healy. YES, she really went there and spilled ALL the tea!
That means we’re taking a trip down Taylor Swift and Matty Healy’s relationship timeline…*deep breath*.
2014
The tale begins in 2014 when Taylor, alongside friends Selena Gomez and Ellie Goulding, attended a Los Angeles concert by Matty’s band, The 1975. Taylor was later spotted donning a shirt promoting the band, while Matty reciprocated by wearing attire showcasing Taylor’s album, 1989. Speculation soared when Matty confirmed their meeting and exchanged numbers, igniting whispers of a potential romance.
March 2016
Despite public support and occasional hangouts, both Taylor and Matty downplayed any romantic involvement. In interviews Matty emphasised the challenges of dating someone as high-profile as Taylor. In an interview with Q Magazine, Healy said it would’ve been “emasculating” for him to date Swift, with whom he had a “flirtation.”
“I don’t do anything else, right, so it doesn’t leave a lot of room for me going out, or shagging someone,” he told the outlet, according to ELLE. “So the one time I did have a flirtation with a girl it ends up going everywhere…. I mean, I got on E! News and people were like, ‘Who’s Matt Healy?’ so that was cool, but I didn’t make a big deal out of it myself.”
“It’s not really anything to talk about, because if she wasn’t Taylor Swift we wouldn’t be talking about her,” he continued. “She wasn’t a big impact on my life. It’s just interesting to me how interested the world is about Taylor Swift.”
He added, “If I had gone out with Taylor Swift I would’ve been, ‘F**king hell! I am not being Taylor Swift’s boyfriend.’ You know, ‘F**k. That.’ That’s also a man thing, a de-masculinating, emasculating thing.”
Healy released an open letter shortly thereafter, claiming that his quotes were “totally taken out of context.” He went on the clarify that he and Swift never dated, but, amid speculation that they did, he was “immersed in a celebrity world that I found confusing and scary.”
As for what he thinks about Taylor, Matty wrote, “I found her to be one of the most gracious, hard working, creatively gifted, and beautiful women that I have had the pleasure to meet. I personally have a lot of respect and admiration for her.”
While Taylor herself maintained a level of privacy around her personal life amidst media scrutiny following a lot of media attention around her 2016 relationship with actor Tom Hiddleston. She began dating English actor Joe Alwyn in late 2016, who kept a very low profile.

Amid rumours that The 1975 would be featured on Taylor’s album, Midnights, Matty took to social media to call the speculation “fake news.” However, the following month, he revealed that his band did record a collaboration with Swift for her album, but it didn’t make the cut.
January 2023
Taylor delighted the crowd at The 1975‘s London show when she made a surprise appearance to perform her song, “Anti-Hero,” for the first time. She also covered the band’s track, “The City.”

March 2023
Taylor begins her record breaking Eras Tour. Fans noted Joe Alwyn’s absence at the shows. A few weeks later in April 2023 it was confirmed that Taylor and Joe had split after 6 years together.
May 2023
Just weeks after announcing her split from Joe, Matty Healy made his appearance on the scene. Taylor and Matty had the internet buzzing when they both mouthed the same thing at each of their concerts. Videos showed them mouthing “This is about you you know who you are you know who you are I love you”.
A few days later Matty was spotted attending the Nashville stop of the Eras Tour. They were photographed together shortly thereafter, and were even spotted holding hands during one outing. Matty attended a number of shows over the next few weeks often standing alongside Taylor’s, family, friends and team in the VIP tent.
Around the same time, a source told ET that the pair reconnected thanks to their mutual pal, Jack Antonoff.
“Taylor and Matty like each other,” another source told ET. “Taylor has a crush on Matty and they are having a good time hanging out. Matty also thinks Taylor is awesome and incredibly talented, too.”
A separate source told ET that “Taylor and Matty have known each other and have history,” noting, “there’s a comfortability factor there, but also feelings of excitement.”
The pair were also seen exiting the Electric Lady recording studio in New York City where it was rumoured Taylor was working on new music.

Taylor faced a lot of backlash online due to her relationship with Matty who has a history of saying problematic things.
After a brief romance, Swift and Healy called it quits, with a source telling ET, “They are both extremely busy and realized they’re not really compatible with each other.”
“Taylor’s friends want what’s best for her and aren’t shocked that their relationship fizzled out since she recently got out of a long-term relationship,” the source added.
April 2024
Rumours spread in Deuxmoi that Matty had been the one to call time on the relationship and ghosted Taylor, which left her devastated.
And listening to ‘THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT‘ she seems to confirm that. Taylor dedicated a lot of time on the album to Matty and how much she loved him, even going so far as to call fans out for ruining the relationship.
As Taylor continued her Eras Tour and a started a relationship with Travis Kelce, and Matty announced a hiatus for The 1975.
