You Can Now Add Your Pronouns To Your Instagram Profile
A few weeks ago on Missy.ie we chatted about why people are putting their pronouns in their social media profiles and why it’s an important part of allyship to support the LGBTQ+ community even if you are cis gendered.
Well, Instagram have announced that they are going to make it super easy for people to display their pronouns with a new dedicated spot on your IG profile to display your preferred pronouns.
Here’s How To Change Your Pronouns On Instagram
- To add your pronouns, open up your Instagram profile on the app and click “edit profile.”
- Click pronouns, and start typing. A list of suggestions will pop up. Each one you tap will be added to your profile, up to four pronouns.
- That’s it!
There’s also an option to show your preferred pronouns to your followers only if that’s what you’d like to do.
Don’t Feel Pressured
We chatted about this in our other article about pronouns, but don’t feel pressured to declare yourself if you don’t feel ready yet. The whole idea of cis gendered people also declaring their pronouns is to provide the LGBTQ+ community with a safe place to declare their preferred pronouns; the idea being that if we all do it, it’s not really a notable thing.
Don’t worry if you’re not quite ready to put your pronouns out there. Some people feel very comfortable with it and it takes others a while. Everyone’s journey is different.
It’s also worth saying that your pronouns do not have to be set in stone; you can change your mind if you figure out that you would prefer to be referred to something different down the road.
This is a great step forward towards inclusivity from Instagram, which we love! Let’s hope other social media platforms follow suit!
