Methods For Hair Removal Other Than Shaving
Whether you love it, leave it or remove it, there are so many different opinions surrounding hair removal and what way works best.
Truth is, everyone’s bodies are different and react in different ways to different hair removal methods. Shaving may be your go to but your bestie might prefer epilating.
When and if we choose to start removing hair from certain parts of our bodies, shaving tends to be our first pick. No hate on shaving, it’s a great quick and easy way of removing hair, but if you are looking to try an alternative method of hair removal, why not give some of these a go!
Waxing
Waxing has a bit of an ouch! reputation but it actually isn’t as bad as many people think it is.
You might feel a small sting for a minute but the results are long-lasting. This is the reason a lot of people choose this method for removing hair. You can safely wax any part of your body, even the more sensitive areas – like your bikini area and underarms -they might just sting a little more.
The great thing about waxing is it can be done by a professional or in the comfort of your own home thanks to the wide range of at-home waxing products on the market now a days.
Preparation is key:
When waxing, it is best to prepare the area a little first. This will make the process a lot easier when it is time. The night before a wax it is a good idea to exfoliate. This loosens the hair in the root which means when it comes to waxing time the hairs are removed a lot easier.
How long do the results last:
You can expect the results of waxing to last around 4-6 weeks. It is worth noting that after waxing you should avoid exercising, skin exposure to sun and or applying heavy duty products such as thick makeup and tan to the skin for around 24 hours to reduce the chance of infection or irritation.
Waxperts is a really great wax that was created here in Ireland and a lot of salons now use nationwide. The team behind Waxperts have also released an at-home waxing kit called Heire.
Sugaring
Hair removal but make it sweet!
Sugaring is a method of hair removal that uses a sticky, gel-like paste to remove hair. It is made up of natural ingredients, lemon, sugar and water. This makes it a safe and natural way of removing hair. A lot of salons use sugaring for hair removal, so check your local salon if you’re interested in this treatment.
How does it work?
Sugaring works in a similar way to wax. Apply the mixture to the area of hair you hoping to remove and pull in the direction of the hair growth. Sugaring differs to waxing as sugaring doesn’t stick to the top layer of the skin. It removes hair from the root and doesn’t pull at skin cells, like waxing does.
Sugaring is most commonly used on the underarms, legs, bikni area and arms.
How long do the results last?
Sugaring results typically last around 3 – 5 weeks. Sugaring has also been shown to reduce hair growth overtime, so the more you do it the less you’ll have to remove!
Epilating
Similar to waxing, epilating has a bit of a reputation of being painful. It isn’t as bad as it is made out to be however, and the results are amazing! Epliating works by removing individual hairs from the root using an epilating device. While shaving only cuts down the hair, epilating completing removes the hair from the follicle, making the results longer lasting.
How does it work?
Depending on the device, epilating can be used on wet or dry hair. We aren’t going to lie to you epilating can be a little uncomfortable when you first start out but the more you epilate, the easier it becomes. Follow the instructions on your specific epilating device. We would recommend starting in an area that isn’t as painful, such as your legs and continue from there.
How long do the results last?
As epilating, similar to waxing, removes hair from the roots you can expect to see results for up to four weeks.
Hair Removal Creams
Hair removal creams are another great way of removing unwanted hair. They are creams that contain key ingredients known to break down hair. They loosen hairs in the hair follicle and enable them to be washed away easily.

Hair removal creams remove hair from just below the skin’s surface so regrowth does happen slightly faster but the bonus with using a cream is it leaves you with lovely smooth, skin in the area it is used on.
Bleaching
Now this one isn’t exactly a hair removal method but it is a way of taking the attention away from areas where you feel your hair is quite dark or very apparent without having to remove the hair. The most common areas bleach is used are arms and face.
The bleach works by removing the colour from the hair making it less visible.
How long do the results last?
How long the effects of bleach on body hair lasts depends on the product and used and the shade of your natural hair. The results typically last around 2 – 3 weeks though.
Buy bleach for the specific area of hair you want removed such as facial hair bleach or body hair bleach and be careful!
IPL
This ones new but it’s fast becoming popular! IPL stands for intense pulse light. It is a long lasting hair removal method. It is a light therapy that is used to treat wrinkles, spots and unwanted body hair.
How does it work?
IPL works by targeting the melanin in the hair in contrast to the melanin in the skin. It works by using high energy light to achieve long term hair reduction. IPL progressively reduces the re-growth of hair through gentle pulses of light that heat the hair follicle. This results in the hair going into a resting phase. Any existing hair sheds away naturally and this results in a much slower regrowth.
It is a very easy method of hair removal as you simply place the machine to the target area and the lights get to work!
How long does it last?
IPL is all about longevity. You simply use the device on the desired area every two weeks for an 8 week period to reduce hair growth. After the initial phase performing the treatment every 6-8 weeks to maintain results is sufficient.

Dermaplaning has a whole host of benefits but it’s main purpose is to act as an exfoliating treatment that removes peach fuzz and dead skin using a blade on a scalpel. Before you shriek in horror, it’s a scalpel specifically designed for hair removal and id safe to use on the most sensitive of areas!
This is a great tool for removing peach fuzz or any unwanted hair on the face. It leaves you with silky, soft skin as well!
