A Missy Guide to Starting Secondary School: How to Settle In, Make Friends & Survive First Year

Team Missy

Starting secondary school can feel like stepping into a whole new world. New teachers, new subjects, new uniforms, new people. Exciting? Yes. Overwhelming? Also yes. But don’t panic! We’ve pulled together the actually useful advice you need to get through those first weeks and beyond.

1. Everyone is nervous (even if they don’t show it)

Here’s the secret: no one starts First Year feeling 100% confident. The ones who seem totally chill? They’re probably just faking it better. Remember, everyone is figuring it out at the same time, you’re not alone in feeling a bit wobbly.

2. Making friends doesn’t happen overnight

If you don’t have a new bestie by the end of Week 1, don’t panic. Real friendships take time to grow. Keep chatting, joining in, and showing up, your people will find you (and you’ll find them).

3. Be the kind one

Even if you know lots of people already, don’t just stick to your bubble. Make an effort with classmates who don’t know anyone. A simple smile, “Want to sit with us?” or even asking how their day is going can make someone feel so much better. You’d want the same kindness if you were in their shoes.

4. Join something (even if you’re unsure)

Clubs, sports, choir, drama…whatever’s on offer, give it a try. Not only do you find out what you actually enjoy, but it’s also the easiest way to meet people who share your vibe.

5. Surviving break + lunch

  • Don’t wait to be invited — just sit down and say hi. Most people will say yes. And if they say no, the do not pass the vibe check!
  • Always pack snacks you actually like (trust us, nothing’s worse than being starving by 11am).

6. Your all-important emergency kit

Every First Year needs a little “just in case” pouch in their bag. Stock it with:

  • Pads/tampons (for you or a friend)
  • Spare hair ties & clips
  • Roll-on deodorant
  • Lip balm
  • A €2 coin (for vending machines/bus emergencies)

It will save you more times than you think.

7. Phone & group chat drama = avoid at all costs

Secondary school comes with WhatsApp groups, Snap streaks and TikTok under the desk. Our advice?

  • Never screenshot to gossip — it always comes back around.
  • Don’t start chats that leave people out.
  • And remember: teachers have eyes everywhere. That TikTok can wait.

8. Give yourself time

Secondary school feels huge at the start, but soon enough it’ll feel like your normal. Don’t expect everything to click straight away. Be patient with yourself, and remember, everyone else is figuring it out too.

Missy says: Secondary school is a fresh start. Be kind, be brave, and don’t stress if it takes time to find your feet. You’ve got this!! And we’ll be here for you every step of the way.
