How To Stop Body Shaming Yourself

Róisín Lynch

When we think of body-shaming we usually think of celebrities and influencers being put down on social media because of the way their bodies look. However many of us body shame ourselves on day to day basis.

Let’s make 2024 the year of body positivity and leave body shaming behind! Here are some steps you can take to turn that hate-hate relationship you have with your body in to a love-love

Positive Affirmations

You are probably so used to thinking about your body in a negative way and critiquing it that you don’t even realise how often you are putting yourself down on a daily basis. This one might take a bit of work but try paying more attention to the thoughts you have about your body and replace the negative thoughts with positive ones.

Instead of thinking “my arms are too big” replace it with a thought about a part of your body that you really like such as the colour of your eyes, or the dimples you have on your cheeks. Focusing on the positive will make you feel better about yourself and make you feel more confident in your own skin!

You’re More Than Your Looks

We put so much of our worth on our physical appearance that we forget that it is such a small part of who we are! Try thinking of the parts of your personality that you love. You’re playful personality, your smile, the way you care for others. They are the things that make you who you are and are ultimately what attract people to you not your looks!

Try replacing negative thoughts about your body with positive thoughts about your personality!

Treat yourself like someone you loved

Have a think about how you speak about yourself in your own head and think would you ever say that to your friend? probably not! There is no one you spend more time with than yourself so make sure you are being kind!

Talk to yourself like you would your best friend. We make sure to build our friends and family up to feel confident, don’t forget about yourself!

Be Grateful

We live in an era that is so fixated on physical appearance and material goods. Thanks to social media we are all striving for a level of perfectionism that simply doesn’t exist. In the mean-time we are forgetting all the simple things we have to be grateful for.

Our bodies are so much more than a good set of abs or a perfect set of teeth. Our bodies do so much for us on a day to day basis that we should be more grateful for. Simple things like being able to walk and run are things that we often take for granted.

Think of your body in terms of all it allows to do and you will soon realise how lucky you are to have the body you do!

Take Care Of Yourself

Take care of yourself without the goal of achieving the “perfect” body.

A lot of the time we exercise, and eat healthy foods, not because it’s good for us but because we are trying to improve our appearance. It is important to take care of our bodies but we need to make sure we aren’t doing it as a punishment for having a cheat meal on the weekend.

Exercise because you enjoy it and it makes you feel good. Eat healthy foods that you actually (emphasis on the actually) enjoy and like the taste of. And allow yourself to have the slice of cake you are craving!! When you change your mindset around exercise and healthy eating you will improve your overall relationship with your body!!

You’re beautiful just the way you are! Bye bye body shaming, hello confidence!
