The origins of Halloween can be traced back over 2,000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced “sow-in”). Samhain marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter in what is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France. It was believed that on the night of October 31st, the boundary between the living and the dead was blurred, and spirits could cross over into the mortal realm.
All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day:
In the 8th century, the Christian church sought to Christianize pagan holidays, and Pope Gregory III designated November 1st as All Saints’ Day, a day to honor saints and martyrs. The evening before became known as All Hallows’ Eve, which later evolved into Halloween. The following day, November 2nd, was dedicated to praying for the souls of the departed, known as All Souls’ Day.
Folk Traditions and Superstitions:
Over time, Halloween incorporated elements from various cultures. In Scotland, for example, young people would go house-to-house in disguise, reciting verses in exchange for food. This practice, known as “guising,” is similar to modern-day trick-or-treating.
