How to Get the Perfect Fake Tan For the Debs

Saoirse Mannion

Debs tanning can be a disaster waiting to happen. You need to get it right.

Going to a beautician for a spray tan can be really expensive and with the already crazy high cost of debs dresses; it makes sense to try and save a little bit where you can. That doesn’t mean you have to compromise on looking good. So we have compiled a list of all the tips and tricks you need to get a flawless fake tan at home for your debs.

Debs Tanning Tips

Showering Before Application

I would advise showering two days before your debs. Shower as you normally would but make sure you exfoliate well before shaving. You can use an exfoliating body scrub or an exfoliation mitt to exfoliate your whole body. (If you already had a layer of tan on you will want to use a tan remover too, Penneys have a great affordable option. You can apply this with your exfoliating mitt, leave on for ten minutes, then rinse off.) Then shave as normal.

Moisturising

After you have finished your shower and dried yourself off well, you will need to moisturise. Make sure to do this the day before you tan, not the same day as this could lead to streaks. Pay special attention to elbows, knees, hands, ankles and feet as these tend to be the areas where tan will stick to the most.

Applying The Tan

You should tan the day before your event. I would suggest tanning about an hour before you go to bed, this way you do not have to feel sticky for the whole day. Ensure that you are in a room with a mirror and good overhead lighting.

To apply the tan, squirt a palm sized amount onto your glove, and apply to skin using circular motions. It is helpful to ask someone else to do the tan on your back if you are not able to do it easily yourself. If you do not have someone who can do this for you, one of my favourite hacks is putting one end of a clothes hanger into your tanning mitt as if it is your hand. Then you hold the other end of the clothes hanger, that way it makes the tan way easier to apply to your back as you can reach so much farther.

You may want to add another layer to your body depending on what kind of look you are going for. Once you have finished the tan on your body you will want to spray a couple sprays of a fake tan face mist onto a large makeup blending brush, and buff that into your face.

Once you are satisfied with your tan, remember to leave a couple of minutes before putting your clothes back on, so you don’t ruin your tan. I would also suggest having dark bedclothes on your bed or putting a towel down to sleep on, so you do not stain anything.

Rinsing Of The Tan

In the morning, straight after you wake up you should rinse off your tan. Rinse it off with water but do not scrub your skin. Once you have finished in the shower you should pat yourself dry, do not rub as this could remove some of the tan.

Practise, practice, practise…don’t try tan out for the first time the night before your debs. Have a few trial runs beforehand and also try out a few different brands of tan to find the one that works best for you and your skin tone.
