Musicals You Can Watch From Home

Sorcha Kennedy

Unfortunately, one of the casualties of COVID-19 is the theatre, and along with that is musicals. As a huge musical theatre fanatic myself, who usually sees around 10 shows a year, I’m really missing going to see a show. Lucky for me, and for you, many musicals are now available to stream. So you can watch some singing and dancing fun, from the comfort of your own home.
Here are the best musicals you can watch from home right now…

Hamilton

When it comes to musicals you can watch from home, you HAVE to start with Hamilton!
Hamilton, written by Lin Manuel Miranda, tells the story of forgotten founding father Alexander Hamilton, and the trials and tribulations of his life.
Tickets for Hamilton have been in high demand since the show premiered in 2016. I was actually fortunate enough to get last-minute tickets to see it on the West End in 2018. This rap style musical with some heartbreaking ballads is perfect for a family night in.

Mamma Mia! and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

This classic movie and its fabulous sequel follows the story of mother and daughter, Donna and Sophie, and features songs by ABBA.
You haven’t lived until you’ve seen the Mamma Mia! movies. With a great cast and even better songs, these movies are a must-see for every musical theatre fan. Make a day of it and watch both in a double feature.
Both now available to stream on Netflix

Funny Girl

This classic movie, starring Barbra Streisand (who originally played the role on Broadway), follows the story of comedian Fanny Brice and her rise to fame.
This is the ultimate musical movie. It stars some of the original Broadway cast members and gives exactly the same feel as seeing it in the theatre. It’s a must-see for any classic movie or musical theatre fanatic.
Streaming now on Netflix.

Grease Live!

This was originally broadcasted live, starring celebrities such as Vanessa Hudgens and Kiki Palmer, and follows the story of Danny Zuko and Sandra Dee.
This remake of the classic musical won 5 Emmys and was the first of it’s kind, mixing live broadcasting and musical theatre. It’s an incredible watch, with a standout performance from Vanessa Hudgens as Rizzo.
Available to watch on Netflix.

Annie (1982) or (2014)

Both the original and the remake follow the story of a mischievous orphan and a serious businessman.
Both versions of the movie are just as good as each other. The original follows the original story from the broadway musical, whereas the remake gives it a bit more of a modern twist.
Both available on Netflix.

Newsies: The Broadway Musical

This popular musical follows the story of a group of newsboys (or newsies) who team up to fight an evil publishing titan.
You can now stream both the original movie and the recorded broadway version ( I personally prefer the atmosphere of the recorded broadway version) on Disney+.

Into The Woods

This musical features dark twists on your favourite classic fairytales, starring Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and Anna Kendrick.
This movie is a personal favourite of mine and is a great adaptation of the fabulous broadway music.
Available to watch on Disney+.

This fantastic musical, based on the story of Romeo and Juliet, tells the story of star crossed lovers who are from separate gangs in New York.
This outstanding musical is an absolute must-see, and there’s a remake coming sometime next year.

Dreamgirls

This big-screen version of the original Broadway musical stars Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce and tells the story of a 1960s girl group and their rise to fame.
I was lucky enough to see this live in London, and in my opinion, the movie is just as good as the live show.
Now available on Netflix.

Mary Poppins or Mary Poppins Returns

The original and the sequel follow the story of the magical nanny, Mary Poppins, who arrives from the sky to the Banks family in London.
This is perfect to watch with younger siblings, and has great songs!
