Stuck in a bad mood? Try using these mood-hacks to reset the day

Neasa Murphy

Sometimes a bad mood creeps up on you slowly, gathering momentum with every small mishap the day brings. A spilled mug of tea here, a late bus there, until finally you drop a pencil and simply burst into tears. Other times a bad mood hits you like a ton of bricks. You wake up in the morning and there it is, no problems necessary. You don’t have your period, the weather isn’t even bad, you just feel terrible for no good reason- it happens to the best of us.
So, what are we to do on these inexplicable bad days? Well, sometimes it’s ok to be in a bad mood. We’re only human after all, and sometimes fighting a bad mood just makes it worse. However, there are days when all you want is to snap out of it. You’ve got an aunt you need to visit, or a few things to pick up in the shops, and you just don’t want to trudge out into the world with this big bad mood dragging behind you like a dead weight. On those days, little tricks can go a long way. Here are a few hacks that can help reset your mood.

Have A Dance Party

This is always a good one to start with because you don’t have to force it. Sometimes, when you’re in a really bad mood, lying on your bed is all you feel capable of doing. On days like this, lazy, simple strategies are your best route to feeling better.  It’s easy to just stick a few tunes on and flop back down on the bed, and often, the urge to dance will eventually just take over… Before you know it, you’re bopping around your room to Sia, and that bad mood doesn’t seem so bad anymore. Go for upbeat songs, and if possible, turn the volume up!

Tidy Your Room

Don’t panic! There’s no need to drag the hoover upstairs, whip out the charity bags or empty your whole closet. Sometimes just picking up a few dirty socks, making your bed and straightening your desk a little does wonders for your mood. Our surroundings have a lot of influence on our feelings, and tidying can be weirdly satisfying. It’s a little Monica from Friends, but it works.

Stretch While You Binge-Watch

A bad mood is capable of ruining anything, even a good Netflix marathon. Ever been in such a bad mood you can’t even concentrate on what you’re watching? It’s annoying, but it’s a thing. Try doing some simple stretches or yoga poses while you’re watching TV. It doesn’t require much effort, and a small amount of activity will get some endorphins going, taking you from “fully done with today” to “ok I can deal now”.

Listen To A Podcast

The beautiful thing about podcasts is they require no effort- you can literally close your eyes and just listen. On a real down day, your mood can make you physically tired. Lying down and enjoying a podcast is a great option when you feel like this. It can also be nice to have something to listen to while you’re doing other things, like getting ready in the morning, or tidying your room. Eat, Drink, And Be Merry

This one is the oldest, most obvious, most over-shared tip of all time, but it’s true! Sometimes you don’t even realise that you’re hungry, low on blood sugar, or dehydrated, and it can completely ruin your mood and your day. So eat, drink, be merry, and remember that you’re a human who deserves to be happy….even if you’re kind of moody now and then!
