We Need To End Period Poverty In Ireland

Period Poverty In Ireland

When you’re a girl, periods become just another part of life. Almost like breathing. They come, you buy sanitary products, you deal with it for the 5 days or so, and then it’s over. Repeated 12 more times in the year. An estimated 450 times in a lifetime.

For some girls and women, a part of that third sentence is a BIG deal. Buying sanitary products is easy for most of us. For others, it’s just not a possibility.

Plan Ireland published a survey titled We Need to Talk. Period. This survey revealed that 50% of Irish girls have experienced problems around affordability of sanitary products. With 61% of girls admitting to missing school because of their period. Are you shocked? Because we were.

Period Poverty In Ireland

The Figures

Sanitary products cost an average of €4.50, and one box does not contain enough tampons or pads to last the average period length. So you have to buy at least 2 packs. We’re already at €9.00. As pointed out by the Irish Times article, pain relief will also more than likely be needed at a cost of around €4.20. That’s a cost of about €13.20 per month. So every year, your period costs about €158.40. *jaw drops.*

In Ireland, sanitary products are zero-rate VAT. Other European countries charge women up to the standard rate of VAT (27%). “Luxury” items like jewellery, beer and wine are charged VAT at this rate. I don’t know about you but the last time I checked, there was nothing luxurious about having your period…

Period Poverty

The unaffordability of sanitary products is labelled ‘period poverty.’ Period poverty effects women and girls who struggle to afford, or have to go without sanitary products during their period. 45% of women in Scotland have had to manage their period by using makeshift sanitary products out of socks, newspaper, and toilet paper. This statistic is more than likely true of most EU countries. This is a mark of period poverty. This has to stop.

We Need To End Period Poverty.

What Is Being Done?

Charities and initiatives have been set up by women and girls to help break the stigma surrounding periods and end period poverty worldwide. In the UK Molly and Nell started Preventing Period Poverty inspired by an A Level class on pressure groups. Molly and the Preventing Period Poverty team were outraged by the 5% luxury item tax remarking, “To give some perspective, Viagra is not taxed since it is ‘a necessity.'” One way for the boys and another for the girls it would seem…

We Need To End Period Poverty.

In Ireland, Homeless Period Ireland helps tackle period poverty in Ireland. They say the purpose of HPI “is to donate feminine hygiene products (pads, tampons, liners, wipes) to those who otherwise would go without. The donations are brought by volunteer drivers to Homeless Outreach Centres, Direct Provision Centres and Women’s Refuges. The HPI is an initiative, not a charity and is 100% reliant on volunteers for distribution and collection of sanitary products.”

On March 13th, an all party motion calling on the Government to provide free sanitary products to women won support in the Dáil. The movement calls for the provision of free sanitary products to be made available in public buildings, schools and universities included! The motion also called for Ireland to work with EU member states to abolish the VAT rates faced by women. So, there does seem to be some light at the end of the tunnel.

What Can I Do?

Donations

If you are in a position to do so, Homeless Period Ireland is always in need of donations of tampons and pads and they have drop off centres around Ireland including: Tropical Popical, Waxperts, UCD, UL, IADT, Rebel Reads Cork, Bella Baby. You can also contact thehomelessperioddublin@gmail.com and see about setting your school up as a drop-off point.

Fundraisers

Until the government provide free sanitary products, ask your school principal if it would be possible to provide free sanitary products to students in your school by holding a fundraiser to raise money for supplies. People could donate their time, money and/or sanitary products.

Education

55% of girls in Ireland feel embarrassed by their period. The social stigma surrounding periods has to end. You can help to end the shame felt by girls and women by normalising periods and talking about them with your friends and family. More than half of the population get a period. So why shouldn’t we talk about it?

Homeless Period Ireland call for education on the expense of periods, and the basic hygiene needs of women saying ““Periods happen every month and unless you are experiencing it, it’s not at the forefront of people’s minds”.

We Need To End Period Poverty.

We at Missy.ie are shocked and angered by the figures surrounding period expenses. The statistics of women and girls facing period poverty in Ireland are heartbreaking and it needs to change now.

Statement Winter Coats for Winter 2018!

We at Missy are fond of a Winter Coat. But why settle for a boring coat when you can have a statement coat? Let’s be honest, coats are a big part of fashion in Ireland, as the chilly weather lasts for a good 6 months, a coat is all we see of an outfit for half the year! This is why a statement winter coat is a wardrobe staple! We’ve put together some of our favourite statement coats, check them out below!

1) Leopard Print

Leopard print is a big statement whether it’s worn as a skirt, a jumper, or a coat! You’ve probably seen them in most shops this year, and it looks like the trend is here to stay for a while so why not invest? We love these faux fur options below, especially the collared coat from Topshop. Nastgal’s option is also fab, but we think Boohoo have won with their cute take on the trend!

2) Faux Fur

So technically, our leopard print options above are faux fur, but how cute are these faux fur bomber style jackets?! Make a statement with Winter colours like this Boohoo blue coat, or this dark green Nastygal jacket! Go more muted with this Topshop baby pink faux fur coat – perfect to transition into Spring!

3) Red Coats

Netflix’s Sabrina has definitely caused a rise in the red statement coat trend, and we’re happy to embrace it! If you’re after Sabrina’s look, this Topshop coat is almost identical to hers. In the line for something a bit more practical for the Winter months? This Boohoo coat is perfect to keep you warm! Not a fan of full on red? Make a statement with an edge with this New Look check coat!

What do you think of our picks? Will you be investing in any this Winter?

How To Give Back This Christmas

Christmastime is arguably the “most wonderful time of the year”, but for some it can be a real struggle. So this Christmas why not team up with a sibling, parent, friend or your classmates and devise a plan to give back this Christmas?

We at Missy are big believers in giving back, and have some suggestions when it comes to how you too can give back this Christmas!

ICHH – Fill A LUAS Event

How To Give Back This Christmastime

Inner City Helping Homeless (ICHH) was established in 2013 and works with the homeless community in Dublin’s inner city. Their LUAS event involves filling up a LUAS with shoeboxes filled with items the homeless community may find useful throughout the Winter months. This includes:

  • Thermal wear
  • hat
  • gloves
  • scarf
  • socks
  • torch
  • sweets/biscuits
  • Christmas card

If you’re not in Dublin, or can’t make it up to donate a box by the 6th of December, check with your local homeless charity to see if they have an event like the ICHH’s. If not, perhaps get together with your school or college and start your own!

Donate To Women’s Aid & Women’s Refuges

How To Give Back This Christmastime

Contact your local Women’s refuge or Women’s Aid and ask if there is anything you can donate over the festive period. Women’s refuges often put up notices asking for donations for sanitary towels, hygiene products, nappies, baby wipes etc. Around Christmas time they may appreciate a donation of toys for children staying in their facilities over the festive period.

Temple Street’s Toy Appeal 2018

How To Give Back This Christmastime

Temple Street hold a Toy Appeal to give Santa a little help every year in ensuring all the children in the care of Temple Street get a nice present to open on Christmas Day! You can find Santa’s list here to see what you can donate this Christmas!

Pet Connection – Cats & Dogs Shoebox Appeal

How To Give Back This Christmastime

We can’t forget our furry friends this Christmas, Pet Connection and Dogs In Distress have launched a shoebox appeal. This involves purchasing a ready-made shoebox online, which will be donated on your behalf to an animal shelter.

Are there any other ways to give back this Christmas? If you have any ideas let us know in the comments below and we can share them.

Layering, The Answer To Winter Fashion!

It can be hard to know exactly what to wear during Autumn/Winter in Ireland. Sometimes it’s freezing, sometimes it’s warm, and most of the time the day starts out chilly only to hit afternoon and be boiling!!

We here at Missy have found the answer to dressing for this A/W season, layering.

Layering allows you to keep warm whilst also looking great. You can then strip off any excess layers should the day get warmer. We’ve put together some looks to inspire your layering!

Look 1.

First, this faux fur bomber jacket deserves a special shoutout. How amazing is it? It’s so versatile for A/W!

Back to the full look… this forest green pinafore is very on trend this season. We’ve paired it with a long sleeve white tee, and the amazing bomber for a very fall inspired look that’ll keep you nice and toasty!

Look 2.

Take a summer-y dress like this snake skin Topshop one and pop a black long sleeve tee underneath. Voilà, a perfect winter outfit! We paired it with a faux leather jacket for an extra layer, and these fab Public Desire boots!

Look 3.

We loved the Public Desire boots and faux leather jacket so much we had to pop them into this layered look!

Leopard print isn’t going anywhere this season, so why not add it to the layering trend with this jumper? Corduroy is also very “in” this AW. We layered this corduroy burgundy shirt underneath for a bit of texture. Pop on a pair of frayed jeans to complete the look!

What do you think of the layering trend? Will you be wearing it this Autumn/Winter season?
